From poking around on the internet, it seems most RAID 0 setups I see have 2 matching drives setup in the raid array (forgive me if I butcher the terminology, as this is new to me).

If I go with RAID, it would be to improve speeds for video editing.  For these purposes, is it possible (even advisable?) to have 1 non-RAID boot disc that houses the OS and all my programs, and then have the two RAID 0 discs as storage drives?  Because RAID 0 isn't redundant, I'd have a 4th external drive that backed it up every night.

I'm just not sure if the boot disc that houses the operating system has to be part of the RAID array, or if the OS needs to be on the RAID disc to get the speed benefit.  Also, on the Digital Storm configuration pages, there doesn't seem to be an option to make discs 2 and 3 the RAID discs, only discs 1 and 2.

Of course, since I don't quite understand all this, I might be missing the point entirely.

Yes, it's possible to have two drives in RAID 0 and a third drive for the OS.

The OS has to be installed on the array to get the speed benefits.

The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

It's also possible to ask for a RAID 0+1 setup if you want to have both the speed advantage of RAID 0 and redundancy of RAID 1. This will, however, require the use of 4 identical HDD's. Here's an article explaining RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 0+1
