the more ram you have the more you can multi task (run more apps at the same time).

the difference in speed is minimal and not that big of a difference.

for the difference between ddr2 and ddr3 look here

The 1333, 1066, 800 etc refer to the Mhz that memory has.  I'm not sure if this applies to new motherboards or doesn't matter anymore what kind of RAM you stick in with these kind of mobos now.  (Back then they defined what memory is compatible to what, sticking in the wrong memory would make the mother board act funky)

Check the memory standard of a motherboard.  If it says DDR2 1066/1333/#### that means those set of sticks is usable by that motherboard.  Note though if a motherboard instead mentions say... PC2 8500 you have to divide it by 8 (in this day and age you don't have to look for things like that anymore, but since you're dealing with Digital Storms anyway, info like this is unecessary, but it's good food for thought lol)

And yes more ram means more multitasking.  As for stuff like 4 GB or 8 GB, the thing about this is due to the architecture of 32-bit, and 64-bit.  Due to the limited mapping space of 32-bit, you can't "map" as much stuff.  So with say.. 4 GBs, at the max.. you'd  only use 3.5 GBs so to speak.  (and this is assuming you don't have other components using the mapping space lol)

With 64-bit the mapping space becomes exponentially bigger, and technically speaking everything moves faster now that everything is being properly utilized.

as for the OS this is how much ram the vista versions use

so if you are getting 8Gb of ram you should go for the premium otherwise with basic you will have the same problem as 4GB to 32bit

well if your mombo can handle 8GB, then go with 4GB right now and then update with 4 more later ;)but go with premium vista regardless

Now why would anyone need 8 GBs anyway?  No one does that severe amount of multi tasking, you'd need what.... 3-4 different games running at the same time?  And that's still not enough lol.  (Running Crysis takes up about 1 gig I believe?)

As for the reason why Premium is recommended is not because of the RAM limit.  (Even though it's better to have a bigger max limit anyway)  Is supposedly because in general Vista Basic sucks as a whole supposedly?  And Premium in general is a much better choice overall right?

premium has a couple of things the basic does not have.

as for 8GB of ram, my 4 smp clients can easily use that much ram

so does the difference in speeds at make a big dif for price?

EDIT:

sorry i said it wrong i mean that does an increase in mhz say from 800 to 1333 give enough of a performance boost to be worth its increase in price?

Editing video camera footage and making a DVD from the raw video is a process that easily takes advantage of my 8 GB of memory and then some with multiple threads running video post processing and other efforts. It speeds the process of making a DVD tremendously.

So if you do any video or sound processing work, more memory is definitely a good thing.
