I have msi x470 pro carbon gaming ac
I recently was running fine with 32gb of 3200mhz sdram but when I put two more in it started booting, stoped, tried again, stopped, tried again, and on the third time it let me get to bios. I noticed the clock speed of my ram was slowed from 3400 htz to 2160 (or close to those) is it because of the higher ram capacitiy? Do I have to run these at a lower speed? Thanks. |

I’m guessing you had 2x16gb and just added another 2x 16gb ram ?
Some ram chips ship with 2160 as default speed and you need to go into Bios and set XMP speed. You new ram sticks could be bad, could be unable to run at that speed with stability or might not be compatible with the first 2 sticks. Are all the sticks the same voltage, speed, etc. ? I would try just the new sticks first to make sure they work. Then go from there. Do you need 64gb ram ? Gaming...no. Productivity apps...maybe.

The sticks are the exaxt same sticks bout a month apart. When I run them at 3000mhz the seem stable so far, but any thing above that seems to cause it to reboot and reset the frequences. This is the ram in question https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232748

Then that’s the sticks or cpu limit. Could be the cpu with its memory controller built in can’t handle more. Not all cpu are created equal. Same cpu on 2 different systems will handle it different. Silicon lottery.
I would still check just the new sticks alone.

Ok ill try that. FYI I have a ryzen 2700x cpu. I would think it would support the fastest because it brand new. im fine with 3000mhz at 64GB i just wanted to see if that was the problem

I agree. The 2700x with its improved integrated memory controller typically can hit 3400, 3500 MHz when pushed. So many variables, like the ram itself, the bin quality of the cpu.....
Good luck. 3000 is plenty fast but I get trying to see what you can get.

So an update. I started messing with the clock speeds a bit changing them slightly everytime until I i got to 3066 MHz and the system booted but it told me I have a memory problems, so I slowed it back to 3000 MHz to see if it would make that message go away. So far I have not seen it yet

Thanks for the update. Couple of final thoughts... sometimes filling all DIMM slots will put the most stress on memory controller and limit speeds. Also, when you bump up speed, sometimes the voltage that feeds it also needs a small bump. But I would be cautious with ram voltage, but a couple of tenths might help. Some suggest staying well below 1.5 with DDR4, but I have no first hand experience.

hmm interesting. Whats the worst that could happen with a couple tenths of a percent? Is bios smart enough to not let it damage anything?
