2GB at 1066MHZ, more ram speed is better imo.

2GB will be faster cause of the 1066MHz speed, but the 4GB will allow you to run more apps at the same time without crashes/hangups.
best thing to do in this case if go for 4GB of ram at 1066MHz best of both worlds. but remember ram speed alone will not make that much of a difference, the biggest difference comes from your processor

Click on "my computer" then choose "properties"
how much ram does is say you have? you can also check your bios, it will tell you how ram you truely have. in xp you should see your 4GB of ram listed as 3GB. in vista you should see your 4GB of ram listed as 3.5GB |

Vista 32 uses 2.5-3.5 ram. Though the service pack should show your full ram regardless.

not sure what you mean HM, what subtracts the ram and shows whats left over? under "my computer">properties, how much ram the OS can see is listed, there is no subtraction.

According to this article, there is very little benefit to faster RAM.
Basically, RAM speed is rarely a bottleneck, so increasing the RAM speed shows very little impact on overall performance (1-3% at best).
Conclusion - More cheap RAM > Less More Expensive RAM
I would be interested if anyone has seen benchmark testing data using real world applications contradicting this.

ok, I will lie and say yes
as I already stated, I agree with your comments, real speed comes from processor, ram at best makes minimal difference to real world apps. Now as for games I don't know. I can tell you I have changed ram speed and not noticed any difference in real world apps, main one was FAH. that thing does not fold one second faster if you raise the speed of ram, but take up the processor and things start moving. 32 bit operating systems can only address up to 4GB of memory which includes RAM, OS needs, and all add-in cards.
So in this case, his video card takes up 512mb memory which leaves him with 3.5GB. Than his sound card also takes up a bit of memory.. And finally his operating system takes up a bit.. which leaves him at 2.8GB. More RAM is always better than faster ram with the current generation of processors in 64 bit operating systems. But since you are using a 32 bit operating system, you are basically limited to ~2-3GB of RAM. |
