When going with 4 GIGs of RAM, is it better to have 4/1 GIG sticks or 2/2 GIG sticks? Does it make a difference one way or the other?
I'm going to do this regardless so I'm not asking about 32 bit vs. 64 bit OSs and the allocation differences between the two. I already understand that. Edited by EdH63 - 10 Jan 2009 at 8:04pm |

2x2 is better, it puts less stress on the memory controller.

2x2 would be less stressful, but 4x1 = more speed

This is what I need to know, my man. I don't want to purchase what I really don't need. I'd rather sacrifice a little speed for a greater life expectancy considering I'm not gaming like I did in the day. 2/4 GIG have been ordered. Much obliged! ![]() Edited by EdH63 - 11 Jan 2009 at 10:27am |

Kind of an after thought here, but since I have these other 2/1 GIGs of Dominator RAM, would it be a problem to keep it in my system to make 6 GIGs (2/2 GIGs and 2/1 GIGs)? It's all the same speced RAM. I know my system won't see it all, but I'll have these left over now if I don't use them.
Thoughts on this? |

you won't be using them if your system won't see it, it should be fine but don't do it.

Your using a 32-bit OS so either way your pc won't even use all 4 gigs. 32-bit will only recognize 3.25GB.

how is 4x1 faster than 2x2? There isn't quad channel memory and 2x2 gives you better timings.

Also keep in mind that the 3.25 ish, gigs that 32 bit will recognize, will be reduced by the amount of GPU ram . So your 4 gigs could easily be reduced to 2.4, or less.
