Yep! That's why after seeing that, I figured not being able to buy my first customized computer paid off in a way.

Is it me, or even despite the fact the Nehalem CPUs got cheaper than the Core2Extreme series, but the mobos haven't gotten any cheaper.....

Prices are starting to be leaked:
Base i7: ~$375
Base X58: ~$400
Base 4GB 1600 DDR3: ~$300
------------------------------------------
~$1,175 before GFX, Moniter, and PSU, for around 10% improved performance,
Sorry, I'd rather have 2x 4870X2's, or 3x 280's for the same price.

Bloomfield is for enthusiasts, what prices did you actually expect? Be happy that Intel is even offering a bloomfield for under $500.

gamerk2, not sure what you like in GPU has got anything to do with CPU, also remember all the stuff about Nehalem is all theory, lets get some real systems and see what they really do and the 10% is only for games, for others things it kills.
Its not fair to judge a CPU only based on gaming, most people do more then just play games with their PCs

Well...I don't see many setups here for NON-Gaming PC's, so that was the assumption I was working on. Besides, do you really need other things to run faster than they already do on a Q9650? Maybe for Video encoding, OK. But I'd rather spend that money getting tri-SLI 280's for gaming, which will give a heck of a lot more than a 10% boost.

Sorry...
I also have issues with the new Memory controller, and the 1.65volt limit on the RAM (due to the CPU and RAM voltage being linked). Too many questions for me to justify buying i7.

you have too many question because your sources are just bs reviews.
even with that voltage i7 will kill penryn in overclocing
again what test did you do that came up with 10% improvement? |

It's not a limit, just a guideline that anything above 1.65v will damage or reduce the lifespan of the processor. I'm sure ASUS and others will have bios options for up to at least 1.9v -.- |

Wouldnt intel word it more like voltages over 1.65 MAY damage your I7. Instead of wording it as it is currently voltages over 1.65 WILL damage your I7?
I guess you could get an I7 if you want to be a synthetic benchmark king, or you compress the hell out of a lot of videos....but otherwise you might as well just pour the money down the drain or wait till programs get opimitzed for that many cores........by 2035.

I don't think it will take til '35 but the point is well made. In order for this new processor to gain anything from hyperthreading or full use of DDR3, the games in question have to be coded for it. If they aren't the increase in performance is limited to the increased efficiency of a single thread, clock for clock. If you're GPU bound, the difference would be much less than 10%... let's call it 0%.

Turns out this thing is an EATX form factor. (As opposed to every other x58 just still being standard ATX)
Not really an issue, since alot of the high end computer cases here can handle EATX. (Thankfully there won't be too many cases of people getting pissed when they find out the mobo is too big for their computer, or a sticker or warning on the box says otherwise.) That being said.... I still don't get why that one lone black PCI-Ex1 slot has to be parallel to the heatsink. (Probably could unscrew it and replace with something else probably right?) You'd think it'd be nice to oh say, get a Xonar D2X, and stick it in that slot. But no, and this is from the same brand peole for lords sake lol. I don't know anything as short or just long enough to not get in the way of that heatsink, so I'm starting to think that slot will get severely unused. |
