Read this before you do anything to re-seat your hardware or when you get your new computer.

Good info, Rule #1: always always ground yourself first.

Shouldn't this one go in the "I was Bored" thread?

Actually, being constantly reminded of this is useful. I've opened up my PC before and stuck my hands in their without proper grounding.. probably not so good. I'll be sure to never do that with my Storm.

It is a good article, and it does a good job of describing ideal conditions, or at least close to them. In a perfect world, we'd all have an earth grounded test bench in a climate controlled lab. We'd also have grounding cables for our comps and ourselves and both would be attached to that bench before we tossed in a RAM upgrade. In the real world though, this generally doesn't happen.
Actually, scratch all that, in an ideal world, there would be a DSO location right next to our homes and we could walk the system across the street and have someone else do it
If neither of these things is true for you:
1. Wear cotton rather than man made fabrics, short sleeved prefered. (T-shirt and jeans)
2. Unplug system
3. Place on top of non conductive, non semiconductive, clean work surface (non waxed, wooden table works great here)
4. Ensure your potential is the same as the case's potential by remaining in contact with it as much as possible. At the very least, touch the case before attempting anything inside of it.
5. try not to work on carpeting (tiles, hardwood floors, or cement would be best)
The best option most people have at their disposal is the kitchen table. I've half thought from time to time of making a simple wrist strap that uses an alligator clamp to keep me in contact with the case while I swap out or add hardware, but it's so seldom I do an upgrade that I never seem to get around to it
Heh, wouldn't be surprised if Radio Shack carries something like that for under $10.
edit:
^^ hmmmm.... there's an idea for something to put in that binder DSO ships with the new systems..... Edited by Tyler Lowe - 19 Oct 2007 at 12:14pm |
