Here's the story: I'm looking to upgrade my PC, and have a mid-high range ~$4000 build picked out. I'm either buying from CyberPower or from Digital Storm, but before I make a final decision, I have two MAJOR questions that needs answering.
I'm recovering from my old alienware build, which featured a Pentium D processer. You might see where this is going. With my side panel off and a turbofan blowing directly on the processer, I can hit 70c on the temperature scale. With the side panel on, I can easily get 85+ degrees.
First: I'm almost certainly getting a QX9770 (Quad 3.2Ghz, 1600 FSB) as my main CPU. Assuming I get the basic Liquid Cooling (Frostbite), what temperatures can I expect at factory speeds? How about if I ask for it to be overclocked? After living with a Pentium D for 2 years, this is a MAJOR sticking point with me.
Second: What are the future advantages of going with a x48 based chipset? I know they will support higher DDR3 frequencies, but are there any other advantages I need to be aware of?
Thats all for now. I eagerly await your replies.

1. There are many factors which will affect your processor temperature such as other components, case, ambient temperature, airflow, etc. But on avg the temperature should be ~35C idle and ~50C load. I can guarantee you that Digital Storm would not ship you a system with a processor hitting 80C+.
2. Going with a x48 instead of a 790i? or something else? Intel chipsets overclock better from my experience. Edited by skyR - 28 May 2008 at 6:56pm |

Any diffrences between 790i and x48? I'm pretty up to date on CPU/GPU technologies, but I'm not as good with motherboards...
And yeah, those temps are in line with what I've heard, but after my last disaster, you can understand why I want to be absolutly sure about temps.

The hottest my cpu has ever gotten was 65* C after playing several hours of assassin's creed on a hot day before switching on the ac. I'm using a stock cooler too. I can't see hitting 80* C, even when I was experimenting with OC.

The main things I am aware of to understand when it comes to x48 vs 790i motherboards:
X48 supports X-Fire for ATI GPU's, and does not support SLI
790i supports SLI for NVidia GPU's, but does not support X-Fire
Generally, the northbridge and often voltage regulation on intel (x48) based motherboards is better than NForce (NVidia) based motherboards. This means that overclocking is generally easier, and to better result with Intel based motherboards.

790i it is then. :D And no, my 80+ degrees is STOCK cooling with no OC. Don't ask...If my Mobo wasn't a P5ND2-SLI (the last model not supporting dual/quad core CPU's), I'd just upgrade the CPU. But I'm not doing a full Mobo transplant and spending $1000 to upgrade.

All I have got to say is stay away from Cyberpower, I have been in the market for about 4 months and researching heavily what company I wanted to purchase from and everything I have read points to a very high chance of dissappointment if you go with CyberPower. I looked them up on BBB and they have a slew of complaints so long that you could wallpaper a mansion if you printed them out.
I bought here after alot of reading of the message boards and the people seem nice so far. Right now my build is in peices parts getting gathered phase... so I am just chomping at the bit to get my beast but once it arrives it will be sweet of that I am quite certain. |
