Hello all,
Originally, I had a much larger budget in mind - but now that its down to placing my order, I'm thinking I want to stick to 3G's. I'll be gaming on a 23" Apple LCD, 1920x1200 - Stuff I'm looking forward to playing are Stalker Clear Sky, Fallout3, Left for Dead, etc. I like to jack up my settings - How do you think this rig will handle? http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=175377 Thanks, - sk |

Looks good, only thing I would recommend is potentially dropping the sound card in favor of onboard sound, bump cooling to Stage 3 and potentially throw in a 2nd HD for storage/games. Or keep the sound and make those minor adjustments for a couple hundred bucks having Stage 3 + 2nd HD is well worth it.

I don't mean to spend your money freely, but rather than dropping your ram to 2GB, I'd stick with 4GB and go with a 64-bit OS. The newer games are going to demand more memory. Assassin's Creed needs 3GB to run with all settings maxxed. I'm sure games will only demand more memory in the future. Perhaps doing some manipulation of the config can keep the 4GB memory and 64-bit OS within your budget.

I don't think you gonna see much OC with stage 2 cooling.
your best OC results are with liquid cooling. also like to vote for 4GB of ram |

I would go with the liquid cooling if you can afford it. If not, atleast upgrade to Stage 3 Cooling. Stage 2 will not yield much of a OC. |

Not to sound like a broken record, but one more voice for the choir: get stage 3 cooling if you plan to overclock. Here's why: Your CPU is going to be putting out more heat, that's something everyone probably already understands about overclocking. You have a stage 2 cooling option selected, so you no doubt understood this well. What not everyone knows, or stops to consider, is the effect ocverclocking has on other system components. Your memory is likely going to be stressed a bit in terms of heat, but also your motherboard power regulation, and your memory controller. Basically, overclocking puts more stress on the whole system, and that shows up as additional heat. The best way to combat this, is high performance case fans *in addition* to liquid cooling. Liquid cooling will definitely help to reduce overall system heat inside your case, and this makes cooling your motherboard components much easier, but even given that, liquid cooled systems can benefit from improved air cooling inside the case. The problem with liquid cooling, is it's relatively expensive, and it makes upgrading your system much more difficult than air cooled solutions.
Second best behind liquid cooling, is stage 3 air cooling. This ensures adequate air flow to all system components. Air, as many will already know, is an outstanding insulater. It is used in double paned and triple paned windows to increase household energy efficiency, and it is just as good at not absorbing heat inside your computer case. This is why we see massive exchange surface areas on heat sinks. Cooler air is better at taking on heat than warm air, and what stage 3 cooling does, is to force enough cooler, room temperature air through your system to compensate for air's poor thermal absorption.
The single best, and most cost effective investment you can make in terms of performance, is improved system cooling. This to the extent that I would heartily recommend stage 3 cooling over the sound card if it comes to that in order to stay in budget. Edited by Tyler Lowe - 15 Aug 2008 at 1:30pm |

HarleyMan - This is a gaming rig only. I have two other PC's and plenty of external storage. 150GBs should be find for gaming.
I can also throw another HD in if/when I run up on my storage capacity in the future.... Edited by sk - 16 Aug 2008 at 8:13pm |

I think we talked about the HD size - basically it boils down to:
1) This is game rig only. Nothing else. 2) I can always buy another rig. 3) I was trying to come in close to 3K, and I'm at like 3.2K so 4) it had to wait. heh. Yeah, I CANNOT wait to get it. Hopefully the dunce shipping guys don't f it up. |
