Budget:
$2000 (for rig, monitor, keyboard etc..) Expectations: I expect it to run like a champ Usage: Gaming, basic web surfing Ok, so I'm ready to place an order, and have a couple of questions. I have 2k to spend, but I am starting from scratch and need everything. I have been leaning towards ODE 1, and getting monitor and such elsewhere. I believe I could stay well below the 2k doing that, and in turn my wife might be a little less paranoid about spending that much LOL. The ODE 1 looks great except that I would like to change the internal lighting. Red makes me angry Haha, so I would like blue. Is that even possible to do? Also, I have been looking at other options like the Dreadnaught 3. I'm just curious if I should spend a little extra on a rig to make any upgrades later less painful. I will mostly be gaming( retired wow player itching to play TOR ). And some basic web stuff. Any advice would be appreciated. |

As a married man myself, I'd say do whatever makes her the happiest. Other then that, I can't really help. I'm a noob here and I don't know much about computers. I'm just shopping around for my dream rig same as you. I do think I read somewhere earlier in the day that they can make changes to the premade rigs, but at a $50 fee.. or something.
Good luck!

Hi boneshaker...Welcome to the forums.
You didn't mention monitor size or resolution you'd being playning at, so let's say a 23" monitor or less at 1920x 1080 resolution or less. A single gpu will let you game at that resolution on high settings, to game on maxed out, ultra settings a sli , 2 gpu, would be needed. The ODE 1 is good performance at a reasonable price. But, not much upgrade potential. The Dreadnought 3 for for about $200 more gives you a better case for cooling, the HafX... ...a motherboard able to upgrade to sli, meaning 2 Nvidia graphic cards,... ... a 800W vesus 600W power to also handle sli even though the 1050HX is better but might kick you too high.... ...add overclocking stage 1 or even better stage 2 and internal lighting to match ODE 1. To make any changes to the ODE is $50 plus any difference in cost...so in your case another $50 to cnhange to blue lighting. Cheaper to do yourself if you went ODE. Hope this helps. Check it out and Good Luck If you could, the second option is the better. If budget allows. Edited by bprat22 - 24 Feb 2012 at 9:39am |

Thank u bprat! That was exactly the response I was looking for. That is the correct assumption on monitor size and reso. I do have another older monitor that I could use for web stuff, so I have wondered if maybe I should do the whole sli thing....in the end, I think I'd be more satisfied...I have been without any computer for about a year now, and I don't want to make a decision on one, and regret it in 6 months. Thank u for your welcome and your help.
@ Faded, yea when all is said and done, if she's ok with it, that's really all that matters LOL, we just moved across the US two weeks ago, and that's not cheap...any money I can keep from spending...just want to maximize my 2k I'm allotted :-) |

Add another gtx 570 1.2 GB card and you're off and running with sli, if budget allows.
Try to at least Cpu Boost, overclocking, to stage 1. It's like added horsepower to the car. And, the most important item.....Free T-shirt.

The sli choices should be in the same list you picked the first card. If you scroll down to the bottom there should be 2x <whatever> and even 3x<whatever>'s down there.
If you're in the Add-on card list, you're in the wrong list. Just go to the video card list and scroll down.

Hi boneshaker,
Just a couple of things to think about. You can't go SLI with the ODE-1 with our changing the power supply first. If you want SLI then look at the ODE-3. The best buy at DS. Frank |

To add onto Frank's post, ODE-1's mobo also does not support SLI.

Still working off the Dreadnought 3, and I'm able to keep my price where I need it. Only other question i have is the difference between a 570 1.2gb and a 570 2.5gb? Are the two vid cards that much different?

I upgraded from the 1.2GB to the 2.5GB and I saw a noticeable difference in several games. The extra VRAM helps in resource hungry games like Arkham City with Physx enabled, BF3 and GTA IV.
It also helps with extra quality detail and eye candy like AA and AF in any game. |
