I have $2100.00 to spend. It's for games. I need it to perform with the latest games, with at least a passing grade, for one year. Any advice?
Is a slower quad better than the fastest duo? When the 8800 GT arrives, are they going to be in stock? Or are they going to hard to come by? Is the 800 beside the DDR2, the speed? Should I consider upgrading the memory, at least upgrade it in time, if not right now? The slower quad will be better for multi-tasking, editing, and anything that requires raw CPU power. The faster duo performs better in the current gen games and applications.
Yes the 800 beside the ram name is the speed. There isn't much a difference in 800 and 1066. Maybe 1 second faster or 1 fps higher... The 8800 GT came out on Monday and they are in very high demand. Digital Storm does offer the 8800 GT, so I suggest getting that over the 8800 GTS 640MB. It is $100 cheaper and performs a lot better. You might want to upgrade to Vista Premium for the schedule back up, aero desktop, media center, .... |

Thanks for the reply SkyR.
I guess I'm confident about all my selections except for the duo vs quad. Most of the games that have yet to be released, like UT3, Crysis, Far Cry 2, the next Splinter Cell, etc, are going to be multi-threaded, right? Is the next generation of games actually here, now? Are the people who are buying Core 2 duo right now going to regret it in 6 months? If I wanted to upgrade duo to quad sometime in the future, is that feasible? Or is it a huge undertaking that isn't worth the trouble and cost? Again, thanks. |

It doesn't make sense to get the Duo core now when the quad core cost about the same. The difference is speed is not a big deal, you can OC the QuadCore. Remember that your CPU won't even run at full speed most of the time but it can use the extra cores. More apps are being update to run the Quadcore now. Yes it's feasible to upgrade from duo to quad but why wait when you can have the future now.

The next generation of gaming.. I guess you could say that starts in November with the release of Crysis and UT3.
Doesn't matter if you pick duo or quad. Both are going to perform extremely well in games. You can always upgrade CPU or GPU in the future easily, it just costs some money. Edited by skyR - 02 Nov 2007 at 12:55am |

Ok, I think I'll go with the quad. Thanks both of you for the help.

I think it can go either way. I went with the Duo you originally selected and have had it for about a week. It's monstrously fast.
Yeah, you can always OC the quad, but then again, you can OC the faster Duo too! ![]() I'll uograde to a quad down the line if it becomes necessary or if tons of apps and games I use frequently begin to utilize all four cores. For the time being, the superfast Duo is making me pretty happy. Chris |
