Hi, can someone update the recommended monitors thread?
My current monitor is 1920x1080 HP w2338h. The screen has a bad reflection to it in bright or sunlit rooms...made Diablo 3 unplayable even with the gamma/brightness/contrast at the highest settings. I'd like to stick with the 1920x1080 res...22" or so. Any recommendations on a good gaming monitor? Does anyone like the glarey screens? When I first took my monitor out of the box I admit I thought the high reflection screen looked cool. I hate the reflection now. The only time it comes in handy is if you want to check behind you to make sure no one is sneaking up on you. Rock on ![]() |

All the Dell UltraSharps are excellent monitors. I currently have the U2410 and have had it for 2 1/2 yrs. I hope to upgrade to the 27" when I have the money.

Here are two pictures of the Dell IPS in action.
Fantastic colors, and darks. Puts off so much light it looks night to my camera. This pic was taken in a lit room during daytime. If ya need anymore just say so. Oh and i left it the normal reso so you can look. ![]() Edited by xii - 28 Jun 2012 at 4:07pm |

I'm using 3 Asus VG278's and they are incredible. Each one is on a custom hinge mount and the center one lifts up and the two side ones can go wherever. Behind the center monitor is the 30" Dell IPS. This design is so I can move the Asus monitors out of the way when I'm doing word processing or such and have the surround monitors when gaming. So far, though, I haven't used my dell monitor..at all. I've preferred these Asus panels and at 27", though lower resolution individually, fit 2 pages perfectly side-by-side per panel, so this setup lets me view 6 pages at once (web pages, word processing documents, etc). Current Resolution, using custom Nvidia bezel correction is 5850 x 1080 The 3D on these panels is unreal. The lightboost technology makes the 3d images as bright as my dell IPS brightness...these Asus crank out approaching 700 nits at full brightness. I game in 3D with them at 70% brightness and it is mind-boggling. The 2ms response time and 120Hz refresh rate are killer too. If you ever venture into the realm of 3d or surround gaming, TRY THESE. Also, I took the plastic backing off of the two side monitors, along with the plastic bezel and slightly overlapped the center monitor with the sides. The result? The bezels are just over 1cm. You can't even see em in 3d and it really makes for a SUPER immersive experience in gaming. The viewing angle on the Asus panels is quite good and the close range 3d distortion is non existent thanks to the 2ms response time and 120Hz refresh rate. I'm sitting about 2.5 ft to 1 yard away from the surround setup and the 3D is flawless. Aside from 3D, the 2D is WONDERFUL as well. It took me a long time to decide to give 3D a real shot, but the lightboost and Nvidia Vision 2 in a 3D Surround setup totally changes the experience. It feels like you're *IN* the game. But if 3D isn't your thing, the 2ms response time and 120hz refresh make these excellent 2d panels as well. Also, this uses edge lit LED technology, very similiar to AMOLED on Samsung phones - so needless to say, the blacks are BLACK and the whites are blinding at high brightness. Also, the screens are matte, not that glossy junk. I hate glossy screens for gaming. Have a glossy screen on my MacBook Pro and I don't mind it, but for gaming, I'm a matte only kind of guy. Sorry for the horrible picture, it doesn't do the monitors ANY justice, it's on an old flip phone. lol. Edited by Err0xx - 29 Jun 2012 at 1:53pm |

Hi belaflek73,
I despise those glarey screens. Yes, they look good in the store even with the store lights glaring on the screen. You thing when you get it home the reflecting lights won't be a problem. Unfortunately any light behind you will reflect in the screen and make them miserable to use. I think for gaming the non/low glare screens are far better. As suggested try the Dell 2312HM. You will like the screen on them. At least that is the case with my NEC. Frank |

Thanks guys,
Everything I've read is that IPS panels do not have fast response times and you can get motion blur.... TN panels are cheaper and have faster pixel response... Why is it then that all these monitors being recommended for gaming have IPS panels?? |

The response numbers are crap used to sell monitors. The IPS monitors have typically a 8 ms response as compared to TN monitors with 2 ms response. If the numbers were true none of us would be gaming on monitors that give us headaches. Never heard anyone on this forum that mainly game, complain of blurr. Manufacturers know what sells.

First, try a 2ms 120hz monitor in windows. Move windows around. Then try a 5+ms monitor at 60hz. The difference is HUGE and yes, you do notice it in gaming. On a second note, try 3D with 2ms response time at 120hz then try it with 5+ms response time at 60hz. Given, the refresh rate (120hz vs. 60hz is MUCH more noticeable in 3d than in 2d, in 3d the difference is staggering, but in 2d it's not that big of a deal. The 2ms response time, however, is very noticeable in 2d and 3d) Do the two above and tell me it's marketing. I may get out my high speed camcorder and do a youtube video of navigation in windows using my 2ms 120hz monitors and my Dell IPS (5ms and 60hz). You can tell a big big difference. You won't notice motion blur until you try a monitor without it. Then it sticks out like a sore thumb. I said "I've never seen motion blur before" too, until I saw a monitor with virtually none. It's kind of like ghosting in 3D with older 3d monitors. Never noticed it till I used these Asus panels, now I can't game in 3D on older ones with lower response times and slower refresh rates. Or how TV looked "Great" before HD TV became more mainstream. Now that many people are used to HD, the old regular definition looks horrid. Until we experienced HD, the regular definition looked fantastic. Motion blur, ghosting, slower monitor response is the same. Don't get me wrong, I love IPS panels too and the Dells are killer choices (I own 3 UltraSharp U3011). But the Asus TN panels have every bit as good of a color reproduction and are blazing fast/crisp. The Dells have a LOT better viewing angle (though the Asus's are quite wonderful) but I don't care if the person sitting across the room can see what I'm doing. Viewing angles don't matter to me so long as I can see everything perfectly. PC monitors are angled so that the user has that perfect angle/view, so viewing angle doesn't amount to anything to me. That's the main advantage IPS has over high-end TN panels. Edited by Err0xx - 29 Jun 2012 at 9:43pm |
