    Posted: 07 Jun 2011 at 8:17pm
I've been off the forum for a while - my Digital Storm "beast" has been hard at work 24/7 since late March on Stanford's Folding at Home when I'm not doing the occasional gaming, making good use of the i7 2600k quad core / hyperthreading performance to make significant contributions to the programs biomedical research. The MSI GTX560Ti, moderately overclocked to 950 MHz, is also quite productive in use 24/7 for "folding". Running at a 24/7 GPU load of 99% as shown in Afterburner, the temps are only 56 deg C, although I don't think all the memory is excercised.

Since it's been a few months since I've had the system, do the Digital Storm techs have any recommendations for firmware update? Also another upgrade question.

The system was delivered with the 2/11/2011 1305 AMI BIOS for the ASUS P867 Deluxe MOBO. ASUS has released two versions since then - 1502 and 1503, and has 1606 in beta. Any known issues with updating to the later versions? I see on the forum that a number of folks have posted that their Stage 7 emails indicated version 1503 - so that's what Digital Storm must be shipping with.

How about recommendations for updates to the Nvidia drivers for the GTX560? I see that Stanford is reporting some issues with some of the newer ones (e.g., 275.33, 64bit Win7 creates issues with the Stanford molecular dynamics simulation software). I'm still running on ForceWare 266.66 that was delivered with the system.

I ordered my system with 4 GBytes of memory. It came with two sticks of 1600 MHz Adata in slots 2 and 4. I notice that slot 1 is tucked way under the Noctua  NH-U12P SE  cooler (which, BTW, is doing an excellent job with the CPU at virtual 100% 24/7 since the end of March). I want to add two 4 Gbyte sticks soon. Any experience of retrofitting additional memory in Slots 1 and 3? Any types to avoid due to big heat spreaders and the proximity of the Noctua?

Thanks.

Don't update bios unless you need to do so due to some problem.

feel free to upgrade your gpu drives whenever you like, however for folding you won't see much of a difference from gpu driver upgrade as games do.

there is a much easier way to fold if you use fah tracker, here is mine:

oc your 560 to get more power for folding, remember fah is shader dependent.

I think you need to just remove the fan from the side of the d14 that is covering your dimms, which is really easy, I think its clipped in.
