Does anyone have any ideas?  My portable hard drive would occasionally not be recognized in my Vista laptop, sometimes it would say "USB device has malfunctioned."

Now it wont be recognized at all?  I tried it in an XP computer and still no luck.  I'll try it on my DS computer when it gets here and maybe i'll have some luck.

It's a seagate 500 gb external.  I'll check their website soon but I know there is a lot of smart people here, thanks

I am not one of the smart ppl... but I would open it up, take out the hard drive,  and try to connect it via regular sata/ide connections.

Ed thanks for the reply, but that means nothing to me :D

Could you explain that to someone who has not been around computers for a while?  Thanks.

I am assuming you mean DONT use the USB connector it has, but take it out of its eccentric completely useless case its in and connect with a different cable.. do I need something to do that ? like an extra cable?
