Well it looks like the majority of people on these forums know a hell of a lot more about computers and their quirks than I do so I would like to ask what registry cleaners are recommended and how often do they need to be used?

don't touch your registry unless it gives you errors, cleaning your registry will not make much of a difference if any now in days, but it can always be more trouble then its worth.
CCleaner does have a good one, but take it from me, unless you know what you are doing stay away from your registry. Edited by DST4ME - 30 Sep 2009 at 5:41am |

Thanks Roadkill...Ok DST...but if I run the scan with CC...and it shows
errors....would it be prudent to delete them all or would you pick and
choose which ones to delete and which ones to keep?

when I say errors I mean if your pc is not behaving right or windows is giving you errors regarding the registry.
I would leave it alone. |

I use System Mechanic 9 for automated maintenance and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 for spyware/antivirus. I have been happy with both products.

I've used PC Tool's Registry Mechanic for three years, no issues yet.
I do think the companies overestimate / inflate the amount of performance you get from a "clean" registry and the problems a "dirty" one causes. I like having a (supposedly) error-free one, though, it's one less cause if I have problems with the OS or an application.

I've used RegVac for years and never had a problem (PAID VERSION). Very safe to use and is dummy proof. If you've never cleaned your registry over the years that can absolutely be a cause for slow down among other things. It takes a bunch of build up to slow it, but it definitely can be a variable. Is there a risk of messing something up? Sure. That's why you run a back-up before performing a registry run.
Before I started using a registry cleaner I did nothing that had related to my registry at all... ever. Then I started talking with a couple of my propeller-headed friends and they recommended cleaning the registry every now and then... with caution. They steered me toward RegVac and I have never regretted it. I used it on my wife's old Dell and Reg Vac ran all day long and into the night isolating and removing over 7000 entries that were slowing down her system. Her system at that time was a boat anchor and was slow as a fat hog draggin his pecker in the pen. I remember starting the program around 10:00 AM that morning and it ran until about 10:00 PM that night. That's how much crap was in her registry that had accumulated. After removal, and needless to say, her system performed much more efficiently. Now, my wife's scenario is possibly an extreme case but, it could very well be a common one if in fact you are one that has never touched your registry. I use CCleaner, Spyware Doctor, Spy Sweeper, Auslogics Disk Defrag and A1 Ultra PC Cleaner, but none of those deep cleanse your registry like a dedicated reg cleaner does. You run the risk by running any cleaner, more most likely with a dedicated reg cleaner. The programs are there for your benefit, and if you use common sense and always back-up your info, then they can be a huge benefit to you. Run at your own risk. And remember, one's experience will not necessarily be your own. Edited by EdH63 - 13 Oct 2009 at 2:05pm |
