I'm in the process of replacing the hard drive on my digital storm desktop Vanquish 7 series (it should be delivered by this evening), and I will need to re-install the operating system (Windows 10). I received a little silver thumb drive with system information and OS on it when I got the computer, and subsequently used it during a service call where the OS and system files needed to be reinstalled.

Unfortunately, this thumb drive is no longer working.Cry I get a message that it is unreadable and needs to be reformatted when I insert it in my laptop (a windows 8.1 lenovo machine I am using as a backup while the Digital Storm computer is unavailable).

I am guessing this means the little silver disk got corrupted somehow while sitting around inits box in my closet, so I will have to use the DVD that came with my Digital Storm Computer to reinstall windows 10.

I don't have a DVD drive on my Digital storm computer, though I have an old external one I can plug in that will hopefully be detected. I can't find instructions on reinstalling windows 10 from a DVD anywhere--they all assume I'll be using a thumb drive with the backed up files and OS etc (the computer's hard drive died very abruptly so no system backups were made, aside from what was already on the now useless silver thumb drive. Does anyone have any advice here?

Also, any advice on making a new system backup on a new thumb drive once I have (hopefully) reinstalled Windows 10 on the new drive and gotten my computer working again? System specs are:

Processor: intel core i7 -8700k 6core 3.70 GHz
Motherboard:ASUS/MSI (intel Z370 chipset)
System memory: 16GB DDR4 3000MHx Digital Storm performance series
Power supply 600W Digital Storm performance series (supports up to NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU
Storage set one (which is dead): 1xSSD (240 GB digital Storm performance series, which is an XPG m.2 NVMe)

(Replacement drive will be a Samsung 970 Evo plus SSD 500GB m.2 NVMe)

Storage Set two: 1x Storage 2TB toshiba

Video card is a 1x Geforce GTX 1070Ti 8Gb

Thanks and sorry for the length of this post

First, it occurs to me that your laptop may be the culprit when trying to read your thumb drive. Try changing the bios on your Vanquish to boot from a thumbdrive and see what happens.

Second, I think the best way I would approach the re-install from disk would be to unplug any other drives you have besides the new NVMe. Go into your BIOS, and select the external DVD as the boot drive. Put in the Windows DVD and boot the Vanquish. If I recall correctly, the DVD will tell you what to do automatically. Having only your new drive active will take any guesswork out of which drive to install to. When the installation is complete, go into the BIOS and change the boot drive to your NVMe. Boot up to see everything's cool, then power down and reconnect your other drives.

I haven't done this in so long, I may be off a little, but not too much. If you're hesitant, I'm pretty sure if you Google "installing win 10 from a disc" you might get a hit.
