I have a 2yr old DS system. I want to replace my 8800GTX with the 295. Can I do this safely? Would it be a big improvement? Drumbanger

Somebody who knows about these things will give you the staight scoop, but in the mean time.... I think there may be performance issues using a PCIe 2.0 based 200 series card in a 680i mobo with PCIe 1.0. The vid card will work (I use one), but not at full speed. Actually, I'd like to hear some one say a few words about this subject in general. |

BC is right, we just went over this with somebody else I think, since you have 680i your are PCI-1.0 and will not be able to take advantage of 295's full power.
also improvement from GPU depends on your resolution, if games are playing smooth now then you have nothing to gain really. |

Also, I would like to point out that currently almost every game in existence is optimized for the 8800. It runs most games as good as the 2xx series in a lot of cases (runs oblivion a hell of a lot better, at least in my case), so imo it's not worth an upgrade.

Depends on the resolution. On 1900x1200 or higher id recommend an upgrade just due to pure Vmemory issues.

You can get away with a 260gtx, 4870 on a PCI-E 1.0 with no difference vs. pci-e 2.0. If you want to use a x2 card (4870x2 or 295GTX) or even the 280GTX or 285GTX, you should upgrade to a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard, otherwise you will not reach the full potential of the video cards, as others have mentioned above.
Very helpful: http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=2249&all=1
You could try SLI 260GTX, since they would be using 2 PCI-E 1.0 slots (unlike an X2 card), although with your current setup, you may start running into CPU bottleneck issues. Edited by MarkNY - 01 May 2009 at 2:42pm |

also- in response to Zerg's comment- I upgraded a while back from 2x 8800 ULTRA (EVGA SSC OC'd) to 2x XXX 280GTX (OC'd to 710mhz) and there was a noticable difference. While the framerate for most games remained the same, the games were A LOT letss choppy and ran a lot smoother than with the 8800s. |

All of the Nvidia200/ATI 4000 series are technically pci-e 2.0, however the 260, 4850, 4870, from everything I have read will not fully saturate a pci-e 1.0 slot. Ie- they won't utilize the entire availble bandwidth (or it will be close enought o the point where it is impossible to notice a difference). The 280GTX, 285GTX, 295GTX, 4870x2, 4890, however, require a pci-e 2.0 slot to gain maximum performnce levels. |

never mind I read the charts wrong, looks like it does not make that much of a difference but I would like to see an i7 systems tested, this was on a x48 platform.

MarkNY,
Thanks for the link to that article. It was helpful. I came away with the feeling that the current generation of video cards, or at least the current generation of drivers, are not badly impacted by using PCIe 1. Only the fastest cards will take a noticable hit..., sometimes.
