I’m considering purchasing my third digital storm computer. I bought one in 2009 and a more robust desktop in 2012. The desktop served me well for nearly 9 years but has recently failed. At the time it was a graduation gift for myself and I did a ton of research beforehand on configs and parts.

Fast forward to now and I’m thinking I want to purchase another system, and while my spending capacity is drastically increased, my time is not as we have added three kids to our family since then and my career is much busier. With COVID however I work from home much more and have time to jump off to play a game for a bit.

When I do look at the different systems I’m essentially lost at this point. I see a lot of configs even in the 3k range running the 1600 series NVIDIA cards. When I bought mine in 2012 I had about a 3.6k config and had top of the line cards.

What can one expect to spend on a higher range gaming PC these days? I’d likely want 4k gaming but I’m not streaming or using the PC 12 hours a day. I don’t want to buy something I’ll have to replace in 3 years and I don’t like having to work on the system, so reliability and longevity would be my main priority.

I’m really not sure where to even set my expectations on price or parts and would love some advice. I’ve always loved my DS systems and would be excited to purchase something from them again, but I am just too far removed from current gen tech to know what I should be pricing around.

(Also @ DS mods my old Forum account was attached to my law school email which has long since been deactivated after graduation. Is there any way to get it back?)

Ok, I am fairly new to the PC building so please don't take this post as an expert opinion but i have been watching a lot of videos as well as watching recent benchmarks on system parts so I might be able to help a bit. This might be long since I like to ramble.

Ill cut to the chase early, gaming in 4K 60 fps on any game will probably run you around 4,000 to 6,000 if you include the monitor. Gaming in 4K is still in its infancy stage so even "higher end" systems can have trouble running everything smooth (60 fps is thought of as "standard" for most gamers) but can easily get the job done.

AMD has caught up in the CPU industry with intel (who were the premier CPU company in 2009) and in some cases is a better buy at a price per core basis. I wouldn't think less of the build if it has an AMD CPU this day in age and can save you some $. For 4K gaming the 10-900K will definitely get the job done for you though.

GPU is getting very interesting since the 30XX series was just announced yesterday from NVIDIA and on top of that AMD is releasing their NAVI 2 GPUs which have been rumored to be very powerful compared to the 2080 TI which is going to be your premiere 4K graphics card at this point. If you dont want to wait I dont blame you however if you are in no rush then you could wait a couple months and see if these GPUs will get the best 4K gaming experience you need.

If you are not looking to do any upgrades I would recommend getting 32 gigs of RAM. Most gaming PCs usually want you around 16 gigs but new games like Microsoft flight simulator are starting to push the RAM limits and if you are getting a high end PC I would get 32 gigs just to be safe.

M.2 NVME SSD is a must for any high end system storage wise. These drives load everything that's on it (Games, OS, ect.) lightning fast compared to hard drives and standard SSDs. Obviously for any storage the bigger the better so get whatever is in your price range. I see a lot of people buy a small M.2 NVME SSD (500 gigs or so) and put their OS and some other things they use often so that those operations load very fast and a bigger hard drive to put other stuff that is not used as often which might take time to load.

I have rambled on enough but other things to look at is water cooling CPU & GPU, Motherboard (dependent on what you want in your build), power supply (again based on the needs of your build) and so on.

Anyone who has more experience than me is more than welcome to correct me but this is what I have gathered over the past couple of months.

The new Nvidia GPUs are a game changer at 4K. Do you have a 4K monitor? Is this build going to be a gaming rig more than anything?

Pick a case. For gaming you will be very happy with an Intel 10700K. It's lightning fast and way overpowered ATM, so it will last anywhere 5-8 years. More cores/threads are not worth paying for as they will not be better for gaming.

I agree 32GB of RAM would be a good choice because RAM is not very expensive these days. You want an 850W PSU, and slightly better than the baseline mobos will be fine (Asus TUF perhaps) unless you have particular needs/ preferences. Get a dual fan all-in-one liquid cooler for your CPU and you won't need any more.

SSD storage is the way to go. M.2 NVMe SSDs are around the size of a pocket comb and plug into a slot right on the motherboard. They run off the PCIe bus and are up to 5 times faster than a SATA SSD. I recommend a smallish one of those for OS, apps, and maintenance software; a handful of favorite games. The smaller ones will scan for malware/viruses/cookies really fast, and I love that! Then add a SATA SSD for main storage in any size you need.

I can't suggest a build because the new cards aren't for sale yet. Do your own research on those for what you want. It appears the 3070 will be the right card for a 4K monitor at 60 Hz, and the 3080 might be all you need for a high framerate 4K. Don't know yet. Be advised a high framerate 4K monitor will run at least $1200 or more last time I looked. 60Hz ones are much more reasonable. According to NVidia, the 3070 is faster than the last gen 2080 Ti which was the only reasonable choice for 4K. You will have a wait of perhaps a month for these cards, but if 4k is your goal, there literally is no choice.

Hope it helps. If you want a more specific sample build, come back with what you really expect and a budget when the cards are available.

Welcome back!

As for your old email address you're probably going to have to direct that line of inquiry at Alex ([email protected]). He'll probably want to know your old email and the old order numbers associated with it...

Best of luck!

Thank you both so much for the detailed responses. That is exactly what I needed and it helps catch me up on the status quo for the current gaming market and what I should expect for 4K gaming.

I don’t have a monitor purchased or anything else yet so I am going to sit tight while the new cards release and when they are available look to buy something then.

Thank you both again.

Wise. The 3070 is coming Oct., so you might be able to order that by the middle of this month, but DS may prefer to wait until they actually have the inventory. Hang in, and come back here if you want a sample build at a certain price point.
