Budget - not a big issue.  Will used for gaming primarily.  My computer room has a handful of systems, and it does get warm - so cooling system is important.

I haven't used SSDs before. and I've heard mixed advice about them.  I'm tired of sluggish boot-times.  Are SSDs ready for prime-time?  What about SSD hybrids?

Is overclocking worth it?

Would a second graphics card be worthwhile?

My spec ID is -- 610071

SSDs are well worth it, as is overclocking (for the CPU, that is). It'd be hard to recommend a GPU setup for you without knowing what resolution you plan to be playing at. Cooling isn't that big of a deal with Sandy Bridge CPUs, so even modest air cooling will suffice for some blistering overclock speeds.
I don't know sh*t about computers. Not. sh*t.

that config is all wrong, you got the wrong mobo there, too much ram, wrong psu, as for the rest, as BM said, we need to know the native res of your monitor to tell you what you really need but that config is not giving you most performance for your money.

SSDs have been prime time, but all ssds are not the same, so not all are great, but the only wrong with the good proven ssds like the intel 320, crucial c300/m4 is their price, otherwise they are great and needed for a balanced system.

now what is your room temp? coolers can't perform miracles, if your room temp is high, there is only so much coolers can do.

My native resolution is 1680 x 1050, but I am considering upgrading one of my monitors.  I play at the best resolution the games support.

Room temp isn't too bad - It peaks at about 80F in the summer.

As for the mobo, psu, and such - I chose the ones labeled 'Best' by SD.  What's wrong with them?  What should I be looking for?

Thanks for the advice!

Hi JK,

The Good and Best recommendations from DS are relative to your requirements. Most Best recommendations have more features or options but if you don't use them, why pay for them? There are usually several Best selections.

Just taking the PSU for an example. The 1000w DS PSU gives you the power you need but the Corsair 1050HX gives you the same power with a better power supply and a 7 year warranty. In this case a much better choice than what you made.

Here is build 610255. Cost $2682

This system is more powerful than your system with a better PSU, SSD and OC. The MoBo is all you need. The system cost is $200 less. If you can stretch your budget to $3000 get a second GPU. SLI perfromance will be much higher than a single GPU.

You should play your game at the native resolution of your monitor, not the highest resulation the game plays at.

There is a problem that your room tempature is too high at 80 degrees. You will have tempature problems with your computer. Is there any way to reduce the room temp or move the computer to a cooler room? The cooling system in a computer uses ambient room tempatures to cool the computer. If the room temp is already hot the computer cooling system can't do its job.

Normally we would recommend a stage 2 OC like I included in my suggested system. With an 80 degree room that may not be wise. Got to cool that room! You really want that stage 2 OC.

Great info, thanks very much Frank.

My last question is about the Expansion Bay options.  What exactly is the External USB Digital Media Card Reader?  Is it like an external drive that connects by a USB cable? Or does it plug into a bay?

Jk, I think you will find that this an external card reader that sits on the desk and plugs into an USB port. So if you have a memory card to read you plug this devise into a USB port. Then plug your memory card into the devise. Now your computer can read the information on the memory card.

DS's rating is based on what they like to sell and opinion, they don't represent what is really better then the other.

the DS psu is rebrand and you don't know who makes it, the 1050hx has a long track record of reliability and quality, and a 7 year warranty on top of that.

frank's build might need one adjustment but first as I said I need to know the res you want to support, the res is not upto the game its upto the monitor.

you said you want to upgrade monitor, to what size/res? if you want this pc to run that new monitor, we need to know the res.

the build frank gave is one you can upgrade later to support higher res.

the room temps is not a problem for oc, its problem for all parts, lowing the oc is not gonna solve anything, the gpus under load the psu and etc are all gonna be running hot if room temp is 80f or higher.
