Topic: Review this build. Posted: 16 May 2010 at 6:23am |
I bought a gaming rig a few months ago from Digital Storm and love it. I'm considering buying a second system from them and giving my brother the previous system. My budget range is no more than $2000, however I would like to keep it around the $1800 range. I mainly play mmo games such as DDO, WoW, Warhammer Online, and Age of Conan. I'm also planning on playing Diablo 3 when it comes out. The last pc I bought had a DVD writer drive and I am considering upgrading this one with a Blu-Ray/DVD drive since I would like to purchase a few Blu-Rays in the future and plan on getting an HD monitor. I will probably go for 1920X1080 resolution, possibly 1920X1200. By the way, which resolution would be better for viewing movies? I thought about going for a designated sound card, but I'm not for sure, since that will bump up the price considerably. The onboard audio of my current system seems acceptable, but I feel it could be better. I would probably go for the Asus Xonar D2 card if I did get one, since I've read several bad reviews of the Fatality X-Fi cards. I chose the Sniper case because I like the look better than the HAF 932, and because it comes with dust filters for fans and such. My current case is a HAF 932 and it is a nice case, but it lacks dust filters and the red led fan in the front clashes with my blue led light in the case. Does Digital Storm offer an alternative to the default red led fan on the front of the 932 case? Anyways, here is the build I have come up with so far.

Better res for movies is 1920x1080. Thats' native for widescreen. 1920x1200 gives you bars at top and bottom, but more screen for gaming.
Your build looks fine to me. You could save a few bucks on the motherboard if you don't see dual cards in your future, and maybe upgrade to Win7 Pro for it's XP mode.
Sound card might be overkill at this point with your budget. Easy to add later.
I've heard the HAF front fan is avilable from Coolermaster in blue, but DK if DS has that option. My Sniper did not come stock w/filters.

If I'm just sticking with one 5870, is the EVGA X58 Micro Edition SLI what I should go with? Also, is the 750 watt power supply sufficient?

Also, could someone confirm if the Cooler Master Sniper cases from Digital Storm come with dust filters on all open intakes. All the reviews and videos I've seen of the case state that it comes standard with dust filters.

Alex, is the Sniper case that DS offers the regular Sniper case or the black edition Sniper case with the black interior and added 200mm Blue LED fan on the side?

don't pay attention to pics, that is not how you will get your case. you case looks depends on what you choose, both budget builds and blackops case's start out looking the same way.
Here you go Ticket# 407302 --- Price: $1898 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $1898 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master CM Storm Sniper Exterior Finish: - Not Available Trim Accents: - Not Available Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Player (Play Blu-Ray and Play DVDs) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) H20 Tube Color:- Not Available Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Enhancements: - Not Available Chassis Mods: - Not Available Noise Reduction: - Not Available Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - Not Available Boost Memory: - Not Available Boost OS: - Not Available Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - Not Available Office: - Not Available Benchmarking: - Not Available Install/Test Game: FREE: Please include a free copy of a hot-selling game Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Xtra Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Limited Warranty with Life-Time Customer Support if you plan on going dual cf in the future then you need to get the 1000w corsair psu. as for your own 932, CM makes the same 230mm red led fan that you have in the front, in blue, so you can change that. you can custom removable filters for your 932. just like 932 top/side/front fans are all 230mm, the sniper's top/side/front fans are all 200mm and just like haf they come in blue or red, so in fact your haf for example can have 3 x 230mm blue led fans for side/front/top, same for sniper, the only difference is that sniper uses 200mm fans. the dust filters on sniper are the mesh covers, they are not removable filters, and its on on every opening. DST4ME has it all correct. My Sniper does have fine mesh dust filters everywhere. can't believe I overlooked that! The 200mm side fan is included. My fans are also blue and it looks great.

Yeah that sounds like the black edition Sniper case. It comes with the additional 200mm side fan standard. I'll probably go with that case then because I like the fact it comes with dust filters and the fan speed/led control on top. The In Win Maelstrom case looked interesting, except for the ugly fake green handles on the front of the case. I wish Cooler Master made some high air flow cases that didn't have the military look to them. I don't play any fps games, so it would be cool to just have a fairly simple looking case, with good air flow, and maybe a few led fans. I like the modern sleek look of the elite 310, but it lacks good air flow and space. So I guess the Sniper it is!
Now I just have to wait on my refund check to come in from graduate school and I'll order my second DS rig. DST4ME, if I don't plan on ever running dual 5870 cards, will the EVGA X58 Micro Edition work fine? I only play MMO games and I don't think they would require more than a 1X5870 to play at max settings. I may or may not get a sound card, but if I do, I'm going for the Asus Xonar D2. |

yes the micro would be great.
be sure to check and make sure asus has drivers for the xonar for win7 pro 64bit. the cool master ATCS 840 is simple looking case, it basically the haf but without the military look and the side fan, but it has the front and top big fans still. Edited by DST4ME - 18 May 2010 at 1:34am |
