Hey since I'm gonna be getting a new comp soon, I guess I'm gonna need a router to play online and such. Does anyone have any router that they recommend? Also, since I guess two computers would be using the connection, would that make me lag more in games and take longer to load pages etc.? My ISP is Quest Communications so I don't know if that'll affect anything or not. Sorry about my n00bness, I'm trying to learn a lot more about computers and stuff but I still have a lot to learn.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

you want wireless or not?
I am REALLY happy with my Dlink "xtreme n" It has gigabit ports and really good range. The price is right in the middle of the road at $120-$130 and outperforms a lot of routers more expensive than it.

DLink offers great routers.
Lag depends what the other computer is doing. If the other computer is downloading or uploading, it's going to lag for your computer. If the other is just browsing the web or doing nothing, your computer will run fine. |

you can throttle/prioritize the seperate connections with that router by the way and its pretty easy/straightforward |

Mmm, I think I'd prefer wireless cuz the room that my mom's computer is in is pretty far away from where my computer would be so wires would be a hassle.
That D-link router does look really good for the price. But is it wireless? I couldn't really tell from the newegg description. Ok well about the lag, it should be fine cuz my mom doesn't use the comp too often, much less download stuff. Oh and how is the Linksys Wireless-G Router with SpeedBooster? I heard some good things about it too. |

the extreme N is wireless and has REALLY good range... everywhere in my house (both floors) the signal is at least 66% or better. I have gamed on my laptop downstairs and had no problems.
I have had 3 wireless routers but none of them were the one you mentioned... havent heard anything about it. |

Hmm really? Well I think I'll look at some customer reviews for it and if it's not satisfactory, I'll prolly go with the one that you suggested. It's always good to go with something that someone else has used and been happy with you know?

Go with the D-Link Dir-655. This router has won all kind of awards and it's one of the best router i've ever had. I use it for my home network with: A Vista PC, Vista Laptop, WinXP PC, Win98 SE PC and the Xbox 360. Here's the router performance charts: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/ Edited by commast - 06 Nov 2007 at 1:39am |

Has anyone used a USB wireless adapter? We have, at home, a linksys wrt54g router and our laptops have wireless cards. Everything has/is working well. My son, Demonshaft, will be ordering his DSO rig soon, it will be in his room, cannot run Cat5 wire to the router; so I was thinking about the Linksys USB wireless plug in. Would be a nice easy way to get him online with the new machine. Thanks for your thoughts.
