Hello, i am currently wanting to upgrade my video card to a rtx 2080. I have a 650psu and a ryzen 2700x processor, with 64gb of ram, 1hdd, and 3ssds. Will i need to upgrade my psu or will 650 watts be ok?

The 650 watt psu is the recommended minimum for the 2080. I personally would like a 750 watt, but since you already have a build with the 650 watt, I would try it. Chances are no issues. If you start crashing, rolling over, etc then you’ll know.
Good luck. |

Is that the worst that could happen is it just shut itself off until i get a new psu or could i like fry the motherboard or something crazy by it shutting itself down.

Never say never, but damage to the motherboard or any other component is slim. Mostly the graphics card faulting out when it can’t get sufficient power, or the voltages varying.
I’d give it a shot with your psu. If you’re not overclocking, most don’t, it should be fine. The quality of the psu also factors in. |

bprat is the resident expert, but I agree. I'd give it a shot. I've seen quite a few GPU's that were too "hungry" for PSUs over the years and never once saw one do any real damage as there are lots of built-in protections against such failures. Nothing is a guarantee of course as a meteorite might hit your house right as you plug in the GPU, but personally I would give it a shot.

I would point out that you are going to invest $700-$900 on a nice new RTX 2080 ...so why avoid changing out an older minimum capacity 650w PSU for...as an example, a new top of the line 750w Corsair HX750i 750W 80 PLUS PLATINUM efficiency digital all modular PSU with a full 7 yr Corsair warranty that’s going to cost you just $145 on Newegg right now? Modular means power plug sets that fit sockets on the PSU...you only have to use/plug in the power cables that are needed, and so cable management is much easier. Well worth the added $145 in my humble opinion and no worries about power performance...it would outlast your 2080!
