    Posted: 01 Jun 2011 at 4:22pm
Ive been running webroot spysweeper and eset smart security 4 together on vista. I recently upgraded my drives to ssds and installed windows 7. Should I continue running both programs, or just stick with eset?

I feel as if its probably a good idea to ditch webroot, however I am a paranoid web browser. My girlfriend is notorious for opening emails from random people she does not know.

What should I do here?

No av has as good of a anti spyware that spyweeper or malwarebytes have.

so for av firewall its eset and for the best anti spyware protection its ss or mb.

but based on how your gf is, they can't protect you if the gf is opening things and clicking on things she should not be.

my eset is set to renew next month...  I think I was going to give VIPRE® Antivirus Premium a try...  I read the sunbelt software blog all the time and they seem ahead if the malware game.

VIPRE Antivirus Premium is high-performance antivirus + antispyware software with an integrated firewall. It doesn't slow down your PC like other antivirus products. The press loves it, and VIPRE has been VB100 and ICSA certified,

Also....  they started doing LIFETIME subscriptions, so if I like it.. no more renewals for me !!  Big%20Smile

Hmm, I might have to check into VIPRE.. I like the idea of the lifetime subs and that its certified.

I know dst4me is a software guru, what say you?

Life time subscription is a first thing I don't like, second is the fact that its 2011 and they are using their 2009 results/certification. also form what I see its a yearly subscription.

but I have not tested this one yet, but right off the bat I'm very skeptical, some reviews on it I remember reading were complaining of it attacking system files in a false positive situation.

here is a review of pcw:

GFI (formerly Sunbelt) Vipre Antivirus 2011 ($30 for one year, one PC, as of 12/18/2010) finishes tenth in our roundup of 2011 paid antivirus software. Vipre is the epitome of the expression "mixed bag." It detected known malware well, cleaned up after infections competently, and it's reasonably speedy. But its design is cluttered, and it struggled mightily at stopping brand new malware.

Vipre Antivirus is an inconsistent defender: It did perform reasonably well in detecting known malware, finding 97.9 percent of samples. This is a good score, but behind the top performers, which managed detection rates of over 99 percent. Vipre also did a serviceable job at disinfection: it removed all active components 70 percent of the time, and removed all malware components -- active and inactive -- 40 percent of the time. These, again, are good scores, but not quite up to what top performers managed (top-scoring products removed active components 80 percent of the time).

It didn't fare as well, however, in "real-world" detection tests that show how well an antivirus product can block brand new malware. It fully blocked only 60 percent of malware attacks, and partially blocked an additional 16 percent. This was well behind the average full-blocking rate of 83 percent, and placed it at the back of the pack in this test. No product we tested fully blocked all samples.

Vipre also had some minor false positive issues, flagging six good files as potentially maliciou.

If GFI can improve Vipre's blocking of brand new malware, and put some more effort into the interface, it could become a contender. But as it stands now, though, we can't recommend Vipre Antivirus 2011

I doubt very much its gonna be as good as eset in all aspects. and I know it won't do as well on anti spyware as spysweeper or malwarebytes.

timmy can you post us a screenshot of your processes, all of them? You do understand that since you are reading sunbelt and sunbelt makes viper, they are obviously going to say that their own av is best.

Hi...  thanks for your input

I think you may misunderstood my post,  I wasn’t saying Viper was better than Eset, I was just saying I was thinking of trying it just for the sake of trying something new, that’s all

Over all I have been happy with Eset, it doesn’t pester me, doesn’t slow down my PC and I haven’t had a virus on my PC for as long as I have had it… although I had a few Malware get through but I am going to follow your suggestion and also run spysweeper or malwarebytes

Also I saw your sceenshots of your processes and when I get a chance, going to mirror them…  THANKS for those !!!

BUT…  for Viper…  there is a lifetime sub.. which is here..

https://shop.vipreantivirus.com/582/purl-VPP-Lifetime

And to be fair… every software will list results/certification from older years… including Eset.. I only see one award from 2011 !!!

"Kick Ass!" Award Winner – January 2009”

“Awarded Consumers Digest "Best Buy" in April 2008”

http://www.eset.com/us/home/compare-eset-to-competition/awards

And to be fair…  PCW’s Top 10 Paid Antivirus Programs for 2011…  Eset was rated 9 out of 10,  with Viper coming in at 10 out of 10.

And to be fair… the sunbelt security blog http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/ never pushes the program, it is just a great place to learn about the latest security threats/malware/scams.

Again my post here wasn’t saying anything is better then something else… I was just wondering if anyone here was using Viper.  On my DS PC I think I’ll keep Eset on it, because I know it works good (with DST4ME processes options checked and get spysweeper or malwarebytes on it) and on my laptop I think I might try Viper to see if it sucks it not  hehe

it has false positives and pcw recommends eset they still won't recommend viper.

personally any company that offers life time I would stay away from, cause business-wise that would make no sense, and in the long run you would get screwed. a one time of $109 payment is not gonna pay all dev's salary for their lifetime to keep the software running great.

Plus the company changed names already, eset has never done that.

the only way to really see how good it is, we have to infect put pc with the same av/as and then scan with it and then redo the whole thing but with eset and then see who did better, otherwise you won't notice any problems till its too late.

from my past test of eset, I will put money on it that eset will do better with much less false positives. and where viper can attack your system with a false positive, you will find eset will not do that.

So I can run eset and webroot spysweeper in tandem and not suffer any software issues?

I'm always skeptical about running two av/as programs together, it seems like they could cause some issues if they don't mesh well.

You are correct, you don't want to run 2 anti viruses or firewalls together but running ss or mb with eset is a bit different.

ss and mb give you anti spyware protection, while eset is for av and firewall, so you are not really redundent, yes eset and other av do have their anti spyware, but they are not just as good as ss or mb.

So in short yes you can run spysweeper only (not webroot anti virus and anti spyware) with eset with np, I have been doing it for years.

In my test eset was better then avast, which is why I keep eset, where you surf has nothing to do with your av, it has to do with your firewall, just about any good av/firewall can keep you safe no matter where you serf as long as one uses commonsense.

If you know where I surf and what I do, you would not think much of your surfing habits lol.
