Hey Guys,
First post here. I have a config pending and have some questions. First of all, I build all my own PCs, but decided to give the configurator a shot, just to see the price. After I picked up my teeth off the floor, I decided to consider letting you guys do the build.
First question is on the case. I never got a real feel for the manufacturer. The pic on the config page shows Silverstone, which my current config is, but I'm confused by the model numbers. My current extended ATX case is Silverstone TJ09-S with a window over the component side. Are all the cases that end in "si" actually Silverstone cases? If so can I see them on the Silverstone site by using the model numbers like 850si, 950si, 1050si, etc.?
I have other questions, but want to get this one out of the way first.
Thanks for any replies...

give me your budget and what resolution you are going to be gaming at, the cases are renamed but you got it right, the 950 is tj09, but no they are not all SS cases, the 850 is CM, the 1050 is the falcon.
HAF has better cooling ![]() |

Hey DST4, thanks for the quick bounce. I want to stay under 7 grand if possible. My saved config is 239708 if you want a peek. I have never worked with a case as versatile as Silverstone and really want to stay with them. Res would be 1920x1080. Already at 2x SLI, so I wanted to move up to 3x. Scope the config and see what you think... |

Hey DST4me, thanks for your suggestions. First of all, even though I have set 7K as my budget ceiling, I have a tendency to climb higher than I originally planned. So I'm not looking to back up on hardware to save bucks. Since I am a PC technician, instructor, and enthusiast, regressing to a single card video solution is out of the question. I doubt I would even consider staying at 2x SLI with faster cards (currently 2x nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX Superclocked 768MB). So that's my reasoning on moving up to 3x 285s. I've got to feel like I'm reaching for the stars, even if I'm burning bucks on the way. So thanks for your time in putting together the other configs, but I'm pretty much stuck on the 3x SLI solution.
As for the HAF, I'll probably look into it a little closer before I pull the trigger, I'm just so in love with my Silverstone (blush). I do have a question about the X-Fi sound card however. I've been looking at the EVGA X58 3X SLI for some time now and I'm wondering if there would be room for the sound card to fit in the PCI-E slot with three hogs taking up the X16 slots? I don't know if the configurator on the site automatically takes that into consideration or not. What do you think?
Another question concerns the water cooling. I noticed the Stage 3 CPU/Video cooling setup says it cools the CPU and "up to 2" video cards. Well, what happens to the third card in a 3X SLI solution? Also, is this a single loop or dual loop system? Would there be enough room in the case (Si or HAF) for a single loop for the CPU and a separate loop for the three video cards?
Sorry about all the questions, but you did say, "...let's have them" :)

rebelyell, for your resolution, we can come in the middle of the night and take one of your cards and you would never know it.
number of cards don't necessarily mean more graphic power, your resolution will decide how much of your GPU you really use. for 1920x1080 anything over its needs and you are wasting your money. the 295 GTX is a single card but it consist of 2 GPUs, so it a dual card, in other words its like 2 GPUs in one. the reason I gave you the above configs, was not to save money, it was get ride of what will not be used. if you want to go ahead and go with 3 x 285 go ahead, but as long as you understand that the third card will not give you any performance improvement in games, but it will make your case hotter something you don't want. in the HAF there is room for 3 lced GPUs the tj09 might not have it. doubt there will be room for a sound card with tri sli. if you want double loop then you choose double loop, when calling to order let them know you want double loop and all 3 cards lced. got more questions? lets have them too ![]() ![]() ![]() if you wait for the evga classified to come out you wil have room for 3 gpus and sound card. once again I want you to understand that a 295 gtx will beat your dual 8800 gtx. |

Well if you LC the GPUs then there should be room for the sound card. And if you want the fastest thing money can buy and not worried about a little wastage then go with the tri sli 285s and get a dual looped LC on it. I almost went with the 3x285s but my budget would not allow for it

what good is tri 285 at 1920x1080 resolution?
what is the difference between between 150fsp and 160fps? when anything over 70 to 80 fps is basically not noticable? ![]() I mean if your top speed is say 140mph, and one engine is letting you do 140mph, what is a point of adding another engine? you can still only go 140mph, and your one engine was doing that for your comfortably. Well I hope you get a 30" Monitor to play the thing. Then 3x285s will not be a waste. But DST is right you wont notice after 60FPS but I sort of know how you feel about it.

Ya for a 30 (2560 x 1600 or above) tri sli is good but for 1900 x 1200 its a waste.

Thanks Samael, you're the first and only one that identifies with my situation. Sure it's overkill, what's wrong with that? If I overbuild now, then when I get the 30" LCD later on, I'm ready.
And correct me if I'm wrong (probably don't have to invite that) but isn't the GeForce 295 GTX a SINGLE GPU solution? From what I'm used to seeing in nVidia's numbering scheme, a "GX2" indicates dual GPUs, not GTX. I'm sure someone will put me on the right path if I have erred.
I just saw some pics of a 3x SLI LC setup and I'm now considering a self-build. Still can't decide, ...oh well, no rush.
Later...

Yes you are right but the thing with the 295s is that it is each 295 has 2 GPUs built into a single card. A hybrid of the 260 and 280 actually. So in reality what you get with the 2x295s is basically 4 GPUS which would be QUAD SLI. If NVidia decides that it wants to further the capabilities of the this QUAD SLI solution it is extremely probable that the 2x295s will easily beat the 3x285s, right now I would give 3x285s the lead, but only by a little bit. But as I said before I completely understand your situation and if you have the money to burn then why not right? DST means well and does not want to see you waste your money on things that from a performance point of view will not matter at all and I do trust him with these builds, as he helped me build my PC and order it from DS, and he has helped a lot of other people on here as well.
I have only build one PC myself but that was wayy wayy back, when AMD had the lead in performance in CPUs and I think ATi had a really good card called the 8500 if I remember correctly. The thing is if you get it from DS you will be worry free, that is the only reason I went with DS, they have excellent customer service, or else I would have it built by a friend here in Canada and water cool everything and get 3x285s. So the choice if entirely yours what DST and others here tries to do is make sure that you get the best build you possibily can while making sure that there are nothing that you are paying for that you will not need. But as I said before there is nothing wrong with getting the best that you can and making it look awesome in the process, people get 12GBs of RAM which is completely unnecessary for today's applications and gaming, hell people say 6GBs is waste, but it all comes down to personal choice really. So to end please keep us informed as to what you do, even if you build it yourself I would love to see some pics of your rig and some bench scores. ![]() |

it OCes high and it beats the 48070x2 so what does it care what the g-clock of 4870x2 is.
