    Posted: 14 Nov 2009 at 9:49pm

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has a feature named Safe Run which allows you to run apps in a limited virtual environment.  A guy on Amazon.com who reviewed this software said this about  it:

"This "sandbox" feature allows you to select and run applications in a safe virtual environment. If you have a program you're not entirely trusting of, you can add it to the Safe Run list. When you launch those apps from Safe Run, the app launches with a green border around the window to let you know it's running in the sandbox. Any program run inside the sandbox will not be allowed to make changes to your computer. Performance of the applications run inside the sandbox is slowed because it takes much more RAM, so you won't want to run programs inside of it all the time. Internet Explorer is added to the list by default and it crawled when I surfed the web while sandboxed. I love this feature and hope Norton decides to add something similar to their suite. The only bummer is that it is not fully supported in a 64-bit OS. If you run a sandboxed IE on Windows 7 64-bit, you get the following error message, "Functionality of safe run application on x64 platform is limited. Application `Internet Explorer' can malfunction."

Here is a link to a description of Safe Run on the official website for Kaspersky Internet Security 2010:  http://usa.kaspersky.com/support/home/internet_security/t207802595/208280134/

Is this Safe Run feature important to have or is it just a gimmick?

Does ESET Smart Security have a similar feature?

Does ESET Smart Security have a feature similar to Kaspersky's Safe Run?

If yes, then what is it called?

not sure to be honest, its part of the firewall I believe, I think its application modification detection, then you also have your trusted zones that you can set, there are million options in there to be honest.

on top of that eset has a self defense mechanism that stops malware from from changing or disabling eset itself, its called "Self Defense"

Self Defense – ESET Smart Security has built-in technology to prevent malicious software from corrupting or disabling it, so you can rest assured your system is always protected.

Other security apps lock themselves down but I'm not aware of a technology that actually prevent malicious software from corrupting or disabling them.

the av getting corrupted or disabled by malware is a big issue that does happen.
