    Posted: 29 Aug 2008 at 11:23pm
I recenlty received my shiny new Digital Storm Machine with an EVGA 790i Ultra SLI mobo with Vista Home Premium.  I have a 400GB SATA drive from my old PC that I hooked up to the SATA power and SATA slot #3.  slot #1 and #2 are my boot drive and extra SATAII drives.

All the SATA ports have been enabled, I went into the CMOS, selected SATA slot #3, clicked enter to auto detect the drive hooked up there and it doesn't see anyting there, nothing after reboot.

I then shut down, unplugged the SATA cable and plugged the drive into eSATA port with an eSATA to SATA cable, keeping the SATA power plugged in; I rebooted and the drive was not recognized upon reboot - it said "detecting eSATA drives... NONE" or something, like it always says on boot up.

What am I missing?  Help  Confused

Put it back into one of the sata ports on the motherboard. Then boot up. Enter the bios. Go to "standard cmos features". Is it listed under sata 1-6?.If not try other sata ports. Still nothing let us know tuesday. If it does get seen by the bios.

Reboot back into windows. Go to the Control panel > administrative tools > computer management. Open that. When the window pops up look in the middle. Select Storage > disk management. Double click disk management. Look in the middle bottom. Is it listed. If so right click on it and select new simple volume. Then proceed wtih the wizard. Once It finishes it should be listed under My computer. You maybe able to do this while connected to the esata.

Oh yeah be careful in the wizard. To check the box "Do not format". If you don't want to format the drive.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the help, unfortunately, the drive simply does not show up in the "computer management" area nor in the bios.  I also tried plugging it into the power connector that my 2nd SATA hard drive is hooked to and that didnt work, I also checked the advanced bios setup for the SATA ports and it is set to "ALL ENABLED" as it should be.  I just checked this drive out in my other PC before I started this and it was fine.  The drive in question is half full, it is a SATA-1 drive and has an NTFS format, it is currently plugged into power and into SATA slot 3 on the mobo, the system boots fine but without recognizing the new drive.  Does this mobo (EVGA 790i Ultra SLI) support SATA-one drives as well as SATA II drives?  Im afraid to update the bios, not even sure if it is the latest, but I just purchased the PC a month or two ago so it should be pretty much up to date; you(Digital Storm) should know as well as I.

thanks

Humm interesting. Try going to "Standard CMOS Features". Then go down to Sata 3. Press enter. A sub menu will pop up. Put "Extended IDE Drive" to auto. You may want to go into "IDE Auto-Detect" press enter. Then put "IDE Channel 0 Slave" to auto.

Also if you locate your motherboard manual. Either in the binder or white box we sent. You can find the info on page 34.

Also page 18. Hows the Sata ports and there number scheme.

If all else fails. Have you tried to hook it up to the sata cable that works on the good hard drive? Try that if it gets seen by the bios. It may be a cable issue.

Hope this helps.

They do have jumpers. Its just not used for master/slave anymore.

humm Interesting -  jumper pins 3 & 4 enables PUIS ( power up in standby). I wonder if this has anything to do with people not being able to power up there computers. After putting it into sleep mode. With Vista.

Humm also -

Power-up in standby (PUIS) or power management 2 mode (PM2) is a SATA hard disk configuration which prevents the drive from automatic spinup when power is applied. The spinup occurs later by an ATA command, only when the disk is needed, to conserve electric power.

PM2 requires corresponding BIOS support. If PM2 is enabled on the drive but not supported by the BIOS, the drive will not be detected by the system. - this could be a possible cause of the drive not getting detected.

The drive does have jumper pins buther there are no jumper connectors used on the drive - it says on the back of the drive jumpers not required for SATA so Im assuming it is NOT set up in PUIS mode.

thanks,

Yeah they are not required. Any luck on getting it detected?

You may want to try unplug the sata cable from your boot hard-drive then plug it into the hard-drive not getting detected. See if it gets detected in the bios.

Ouch Well, I put the hard drive back into the old machine and it is not detected in the bios either - the drive is dead, I also defragged my maxtor one touch and it now has issues - Vista says the drive must be reformatted to be usedCry.  All my data - two, 400GB drives gone at the same time.  Is there any softwar that can diagnose and fix this, Ive been searching the web - and it doesnt look promising at all.

Also, can I run 2 sets of 2 drives in RAID 1 mode with my EVGA 790i Ultra SLI mobo?
