Um....so what's everyone's take on the Vertex 3 Max IOPS vs. the Intel 510?

75,000 IOPS write sounds pretty nuts to me, and the Vertex 3 seems to be kicking the 510's butt in terms of seq. write.

And they both don't have good controllers.

But I'm sure Dragoon will have more light to shed.

The 75,000 IOPS (around 292MB/s) is only on highly compressible 4k write speeds at high queue depths, though really I haven't seen any really break 70k IOPS (around 269MB/s) in that regard. For incompressible/random 4k write speeds at high queue depths they're down to 32k IOPS (125MB/s).

Still better than the 510s though, which don't do 4k randoms well (slower than a X25-M). For sequential write speed Vertex 3s are anywhere from 160MB/s for incompressible to 450MB/s for compressible. Intel 510s sequential write speed stays steady at 315MB/s for either.

Long term performance degradation wise, the 510 has a Marvell controller (like the C300) and Intel firmware, so it should hold up well as both Intels and C300s do. I have no idea how a Vertex 3 will hold up yet. The newer SandForce controllers seem to have made a great many improvements over the older ones, so I doubt their performance will so catastrophically flatfline like the older SandForces, but... they're still SandForce drives, so good luck with that, I suppose.

They both look pretty yuck to me, I'd rather get a Crucible C300, Crucible M4, or RAID multiple smaller Intel 320s.
