I am getting a laptop for Christmas, and after a huge pain in the ass finding a business that has good CNET reviews and BBB ratings, I have decided that I will(hopefully) be getting an xm15 laptop from Digital Storm. However, the 3 hour battery life is a little short for what I need. Is it possible to outfit it with a secondary battery to increase the battery life?

You can get a spare and switch them when one runs out but you have to have the second one charged already of course.

I was thinking more of like my school laptops, which have a backup battery attached to the bottom of the computer, is that possible? If not, how do I switch to the spare without having to shut down my laptop?

well you can't switch spare without shutting down.

I don't think they can add a second battery, they don't make their own laptops.

Oh yeah, you wouldn't happen to know what battery the xm15 uses, makes it easier finding a second one.
