Hi the question I have is if I decide to sell off my old computers for security reasons should I remove the harddrives so none of my personal info might be recovered like Login & Passwords ? I know items can be deleted on the harddrive but I hear there are programs that can still recover your data since its not really deleted . So is it safe if I just reformat the Drive ? Is there a good data eraser program for harddrives ? Or is it best to unload it without the harddrive installed ? In the past my real old computers were worthless so I just torn them apart & junked them. Thanks.

I would keep your HDD, even if you format the HDD data can be recovered, all these app that say they can secure delete your data are not correct, if somebody wanted to, they can recover data just like the fbi.

you can use the Gutmann process, or others like it to delete data, so it can not be recovered. otherwise do like DST said, kepp your HDD and throw in a new one.. they are cheap!

Many HD eraser programs available, they will overwrite your entire HD many times. True, the FBI, and many other Alphabet Army federal agencies have the technology to retreive data from overwritten drives but really, that paranoia is a bit much, and make no mistake, I am paranoid and I would have no problem giving away a HD after useing the programs.

I think its more a matter of giving away your HDD that at one time had your name, bank info and ss number and such info. if you are not paranoid about that these days, there is a better chance that your identity can be stolen.
