    Posted: 13 Jan 2009 at 11:05am
I recently downloaded the beta for Windows 7 in an attempt to see how the new operating system differs from Vista.  After booting off the Windows 7 cd, the new
operating system said that it could not be installed on a USB drive, nor could it
be installed on either of my two non-system drives.  The system drive is a WD
150G Velociraptor, the two other drives are WD 750GB (7200 rpm) drives.  The Windows 7 software suggested I enable use of the drives as boot drives in the BIOS.  When I checked the BIOS, to my surprise, it only indicated that one drive could be the boot drive (the WD Velociraptor).  Why would the other drives not show up as boot capable drives (could a jumper setting cause this) ?  Do I need to install another harddrive to run Windows 7 ?

I am not sure I understand what you are saying.

Is only one SATA port of the four capable of supporting a boot drive ?  Is there no way to activate any of the other SATA ports to allow booting from other drives ?  Since only one of my drives is bootable (the smallest drive at that), it sounds like I would be better off partitioning a lower performance drive and installing all operating systems on that drive if I want to run multiple operating systems.  (I am also considering running Hyper V on my system).

just run vmware and install windows 7 in that, when installing choose server 2008 as the OS you are installing, this way you don't have to change nothing on your PC and you can test windows 7 all you want

Is VMWare the same thing as Hyper-V ?  Because I mentioned earlier that I would like to also install Hyper-V.

Regardless of the virtualization software I install, I will still have to set up a dual or multi-boot configuration.  The velociraptor disk where Vista currently resides can not be used, since it is a relatively small single partition drive.  The way the system seems to recognize boot disks does not allow me to place an OS on one of my other disks without powering down, opening up the case and switching cables.

I have bought a 1TB drive which will now become the boot drive, and be carved up into at least 4 partitions.  Does VMWare really cost almost $2000 (or is there a cheaper option ? ) because Microsoft's solution is free for now ...For that difference in price, I can live with some instability
