I do very similair work to you, I am a feature film concept artist and I use 3d apps and a lot of photoshop and compositors. I personally do not use overclocks but others do, its a mixed bag of opinions for workstation apps. If you do get the overclock, make sure to just get the noctua air cooler. Youre gonna like having 12 gigs of ram available. You are going to want an Nvidia card for workstation apps. No question about it ATI drivers are not comparible to Nvidia's for workstation apps. I dont know how hardcore your needs are compared to my own, Im definitely a power user but this is what I built myself not too long ago and I couldn't be happier. |

425824 After a lot of research I have come up with this configuration for my budget. What are your thoughts on this? How will the Touch 2000 Aerocool Temperature Display & Fan Controller effect the built in fan controller on the Cooler Master Storm Sniper control panel? i'm a photo enthusiast myself but i guess have similar needs to yours. i've been hanging around these forums for a time, and one thing everyone here seems to recommend highly is an intel ssd for your primary (boot) drive. that will evidently have a very large impact on startup and loading apps. i'm configuring a system with similar needs, but i think a lower price point. tons of really good help here, good luck!

Check with DS to see which version of the Sniper they'd use -- the one
on this site appears different from the "Sniper Black" I saw on the
CoolerMaster site (with the fan speed knob on top).
I would think that if you pick the right cooling options to start with (case and fans), a separate fan controller like the Aerocool should not be necessary. A primary OS HDD with a 16MB cache will be pretty pokey. I agree with cohenfive about adding a small (40 or 80) intel SSD for the OS and apps, to boost general system response (TrakDay loves his), if you can fit it into the budget. If not, see if you can bump to a 32MB cache primary disk. And unless you have an important application that you know absolutely will not run on Win7 but will for XP, you should install Win7. Most reviews I've seen prefer it over XP hands down, and that's where development resources will be targeted going forward. |

Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master CM Storm Sniper the HAF 932 has better airflow
Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe (Intel X58 Chipset)I recommend the EVGA SLI LE Edition, but the asus is fine System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Expansion Bay: Internal Digital Media Card Reader (Black) (NOTE: Disables 2 Front USB Ports) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM)I'd get a 40 or 80GB intel SSD for the OS, much, much, much faster than conventional HDDs Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) the 64MB Cache offers very little performance gains, and is significantly more expensive than the 32 Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition)Two of the same optical drive? Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465 1GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Creative Labs X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional (PCI-Express Slot Based)Do you need a sound card? Most integrated audio on the mobo is quite good, but if you truly need perfect sound, get it I suppose. Extreme Cooling: Standard Factory Heat-sink and Fan The stock heatsink is horrible, get a noctua cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Upgrade Chassis With Zalman Performance Fans (Up to 6 Fans)The zalman performance fans are loud. real loud. if you get HAF 932, airflow wouldn't be an issue either, so you wouldn't need them Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: Touch 2000 Aerocool Temperature Display & Fan Controller (Requires Chassis Airflow Upgrade)Fan controllers are overrated, there's free software that works just as well. Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Believe me, you want an overclock, the sheer improvement in cpu speed is amazing. It will allow you to do everything much faster. Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition Sure you don't want windows 7? It's pretty nice. way better than xp in my opinion. if you need something to run in xp, i believe 7 pro has XP mode, and should allow you to do that. Narrowed it down to three possible builds after inputs from other forum members. I use Photoshop CS3 with Alien Skin Blow Up and Bokeh, Web Studio 5.0 and FotoPlayer for web design, ArchiCAD 7.0 for designing log homes, Chief Architect 8.0 and Autocad 2000i for designing stick built homes, Vectric Vcarve 5.0 for writing CNC programs for my CNC router, SwishMax 3.0 and KooMoves for designing flash SWF's, and various other programs for my work including the Microsoft Office Suite. These programs were all purchased to be used with Windows XP on my old Dell Demension XPS 8200 which is still cranking but slow. The GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 , HD 1 is 80GB, HD 2 is 20GB, and external HD is 250GB. Rendering on this old rig is beautiful but slow. I will be using a large format professional Epson printer on my new rig and also a upper end Epson flatbed film scanner with my new computer build. I want to keep my budget down as much as possible because I have to buy a new NEC monitor designed for image editing and a speaker system also to augment my system build. The reason for these three system cofiguration builds that I'm listing here is to see if the forum members can help me narrow my chices down to one, or point out any errors on my part. Thanks in advance from an old timer newbie. Ticket Number: 426429

You want to get the free CPU overclock.
Don't bother with the 465, it's pretty bad for its price. Either get one of the newly released 460s or a 470. |

Thanks Dragoonseal and eveyone else for all of your inputs; I really appreciate all the info. I am gleaning whatever I can from your expertise. I was not Too knowlegable about building a system before I joined this forum. The information on the newly released 460s was new to me. Thanks very much.
