according to the above article, the thinner substrate of the SkyLake procs is more susceptible to damage from big/heavy coolers when the pc is handled roughly (i.e. during shipping). it is now advised for system builders to remove coolers for shipping to customers. i would expect that low profile/light weight coolers like AIO water coolers would be far less likely to damage the cpu during shipping. anyone ordering a tower air cooler would be advised to make arrangements with DS to request the cooler not be attached to the pc. even better would be for DS to revise their assembly and shipping policies regarding this matter. |

I think this was mentioned in another thread, which I can't find yet, and DS said they haven't been any issues at all with even the Noctua.

Did DS ever notice anything with this? Just curious.

Good question, Tidgxor. Curious myself..
My guess is No, since it appears the cause of the damage isn't the weight of the cooler but installers using power screwdrivers to mount the cooler. How friggin lazy is that. ![]() My last oil change was by a garage for the first time since my car was in for other work.. I always do it myself. WELL, went to change it myself and the filter must've been put on with a pneumatic wrench. Gotta get a strap wrench and a breaker bar to loosen it. LAZY mechanics. Everything is power tools nowadays. |
