Here is the configuration I am intending to get from Digital Storm:
Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Processor: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X58 (Intel X58 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: External USB Digital Media Card Reader Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (150GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer (Play Blu-Ray and Burn DVDs) Internet Access: Wireless-PCI N 300Mbps (Supports 802.11n/g/b) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Corsair A70 Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler If I order the computer built, it will be ~$2,600. If I order the parts from newegg.com and build it myself, it will be about $1,800. I've never built a computer before, but I am reasonably tech savvy. Are they tons of problems I could encounter that would go over my head? Is it worth it to pay the extra for peace of mind? To save ~$800, should I build it myself? I guess I just want to know how hard it really is or what kind of dilemmas I'd run into... |

the difference should not be $800, I have not checked prices for a while but the difference used to be 200 to 400 depending.
also what are the main 2 uses of this pc? |

90% Video Editing / Graphics
10% Gaming (Only Star Craft 2) Yea, the difference was much bigger than I expected. If it were $200-$400, I'd have it done here in a heartbeat. But $800 is nothing to bat an eye at. |

Here is a build you can reference to get an idea on how much you'd save building a computer yourself....
So this is something I plan on building. grand Total is $1,635. You can compare this to the one DST posted up So if you're going to add a i7 2600k, 1000W corsair...it would be closer to 1800 Edited by dodgers2213 - 19 Jan 2011 at 9:33pm |

Well in all fairness its not fair to compare that to my build if we are comparing prices, somethings are not the same.
I'm not saying its not a good system, tho I think you should go intel for ssd. |

this is true. it was just an example
but I went ahead and made one as close to your example as possible...minus the 950W corsair instead of a 750W $1657 grand total (then slash out the $40 in rebates). So a ~$500 difference Edited by dodgers2213 - 20 Jan 2011 at 12:19am |

I did the same when comparing prices back when I was looking at getting a rig here.. ended up saving $800 between Newegg Amazon and Directron with shipping and made a few improvements too like a 850watt instead of 750watt, higher speed ram. I didn't even include the shipping cost for the Digital Storm setup I wanted in the price difference.
The pricing is just odd on some things like RAM.. with digital storm going from 4gig to 8gig costs $167 more and that's what it costs on Newegg for 8gig of RAM running 1866 instead of 1600 (and they even throw in a RAM cooler and lifetime warranty) DS is charging that on top of the 4gig of RAM already that you can't figure out what they're charging for. Plus with Newegg you know what RAM your getting not some "DS certified" I'm sorry but I hate that I want to know what it is.. if its dual channel kit, what its timings are, etc. Another really big price variation I noticed was the CPU cooler.. $150 for the Noctua DH-14? $80 from Amazon. I know its a business which means some middleman fees.. but that is insane. If your looking for a budget build then do it yourself. Everyone seems happy with what they get from Digital Storm though so if you can afford it and don't want to mess with building it yourself or dealing with faulty parts etc then probably not a good idea you do it yourself. I coulda sworn the price difference was lower back before Sandy Bridge came out so who knows maybe the demand on them is so high they hiked up the prices for awhile. Supply and demand its what keeps the world turning. |

The convenience in ordering from a System Builder like DS is that you don't have to build it yourself, and you can also request overclocking at their house to cover under their warranty as well. Most parts you can RMA anyways so DS warranty in some cases isn't too applicable. But it saves you time if you don't have it. However, if you want to build it and you have the means to do it, by all means do it.
Me, I love my current DS rig but would probably start building my own rigs in the future. Have to thank DS for getting me into this stuff though, haha. |

$500 difference sound more like what I was expecting, still a little higher but with 3 year warranty and testing and etc, it worth it IMO, but if the budget is not there then you have no choice but to build it yourself.

I'm just chiming in here to say that I feel this topic has been discussed thoroughly and to stop it constantly rising back up in the 'Configuration Discussion' area, I'm moving it to the 'General Discussion' area.
