I'm running an obscure signal processing program for ground penetrating radar. I run this program processing data sets of 40 to 150 Mb of data daily.
This program written in basic is not multithreaded so what should I look for in a new system to maximize the speed of my program? |

If getting this job done as quickly as possible is your primary concern, then I would think your looking for pure GHz; something like the E6850 or one of the Extreme Duel Core 2 processors. The second core would allow you to browse the web while your data crunching. A fast disk drive probably isn't significant; depends how the progam works.
Of course, bucks are an issue, they're always an issue. At the bleeding edge, incremental performace is expensive. Then there are the new Intel Penryn processors. How bleeding edge do you want to be? Edited by Bill the Cat - 17 Nov 2007 at 2:59pm |

Would there be any advantage to a Xeon or Opteron?

For a single threaded app, I don't believe so, but this question is way beyond my pay grade.
