Budget:
Around $3,000. Expectations: Currently game on a 1900x1200 monitor, hope to go up to a 3D monitor next year or maybe a bigger/higher resolution monitor instead. I have a HAF 932 case now, but don't like it - too dusty inside ALL the time, too noisy. I'd like to get a system I can keep 5+ years with minimal upgrades. Usage: Gaming (ex: WoW, Far Cry 3, Anno 2070, whatever's on Steam sale), Productivity (Photoshot, Illustrator, sometimes big files). Special Needs: Already have some WD Blacks for data drives & a blu-ray drive to add to it. I'm looking for a good balance of quiet, gaming power & low-ish power consumption. Questions: 1) Instead of the 1050W, is the 800W Corsair GS PSU enough for now? ok if I SLI a second 680? 2) For cooling, which is quieter, Vortex 120mm or Noctua NH-D14? or the Cooler Master Hyper 212 if that's enough to cool the system. 3) For higher resolution or 3D gaming, is one 680 enough, or should I consider going ahead with 2 in SLI now? or a single 690? Hi Gurloes..... If you want to 3D game or move to a bigger monitor, I would sli the video cards now. Also, for your Photoshop, Illustrator, etc the X79 mobo's quad channel memory will give you wider bandwidth for the ram intense apps. The Z77 will work nice but is a dual memory mobo.
Here's a config to check out. Just another way to go. Config # 756803 Cost $ 2763 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Corsair Obsidian 550D Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 3820 3.6GHz (Turbo Mode up to 3.8GHz) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X79 (Intel X79 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (240GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: Neutron GTX Series) (SATA 6Gbps) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2GB (Includes PhysX) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (High Performance Cooler) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Game: FREE NVIDIA Bundle - Assassins Creed III (Digital Download Code for all GeForce GTX 600 Series) Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Extra Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty The 3820 4 core chip might be all you need, but if you can swing it, the 3930k, 6 core chip for another $300 might help alot with your apps. You would know that better than I. I changed the single 680 to sli, 2x gtx670. The single 670 is almost the same gaming as the 680, within 5-10 % and lots cheaper. But, the 680 is tops so your call. With this you already have the sli you might need. The 800 w psu might just make it but real close, esp with the x79 mobo and 3930k chip if you went that way being more power hungry, but the 1050HX psu gives you more than you need but lots of headroom. I would stay with the 1050HX. For a cooler, I put in the Hyper 212. I like the air coolers for dependability but I believe you can only stage 1 oc with it. For stage 2 the Vortex 120 might be needed. DS, last i heard, will not put the Noctua d14 in the 550D . Too bad, it is the best. I know you want quiet and less fans, etc but this is a closed up case, the 550D, and DS does thermal test each system, but if it was me I'd put in the Vortex 240mm cooler for added airflow thru the top. The rad will mount under the top, however, which means the top stays of during use for the fans to cool the radiator. They can quiet the fans with a resistor pac for each fan, to lower rpm, so its not bad at all, in my opinion. But, the top stays off. A gaming rig with sli, etc does need good airflow. But, I do understand the dust issue. Hope this helps good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 29 Nov 2012 at 12:32pm |
