With sli can i only add a 280gtx or can I use a 295 with a 280. or will 3 280s even be worth it down the road when they are cheaper and I upgrade my monitor in a month. only going to a 26.6 inch I think it is . around there.

with a 26" I think you will be at 1900 x 1200 so 2 x 280 is all you ever need, 3 x 280 would be for 2560 x 1600 and above.
