So I'll be getting an ODE 1 AND add a SSD intel 520 for her in that ODE 1 as well some time in the near future.

Now that's all fine and dandy, but i am now thinking about mine.

I got my DS rig in late June of 2010, getting "close" to 2 years, i am wondering how my rig is faring against an ODE 1 and what I can do to "even out the playing field" and that's why I need your help and I'll point out where I think I excel at and where i don't compared to the ODE 1.

My customed DS rig:

Case: CoolerMaster CM Storm Sniper (should have better airflow that ODE case)

Processor: i7-930 2.8ghz (is lower class than 2600k, so ODE wins there)

Mobo: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI, Intel X58 chipset, supports SLI. (I think the ODE board is newer, so ODE wins here? i really don't know about the MOBO)

RAM: 6gb DDR3 1600 RAM (ODE wins with 8)

Powersupply: 1000W Corsair, no idea if it's HX or what not, but should be better than the 600w ODE PSU

Hard drive1: OCZ SSD 120G|OCZ VTX3-25SAT3
Hard drive2: 500GB Western Digital (16mb cache, 7200RPM, SATA)
I think the 520 + the ODE HDD will win here....

Vid card: ATI 5870 1GB (ODE's GTX 570 wins)

Cooling: Noctua NH-D14 Extreme Performance fans (I think D14 is better than A50)

Stage 1 overclock to 3.3 to 3.9ghz (ODE wins here)

So my questions are:

1. So how is my rig compared to the ODE 1? Is it still better or around the same since it is a 2yr rig? How much worse is my rig compared to the ODE 1?

2. Do i need to upgrade my RAM to 8? Rite now i am running fine, but maybe I just don't see that i need it?

3. Is there a need to upgrade the 5870 to the GTX 680? How big of a diff does it make?

4. If i change from ATI card to Nvidia card, willl there be a huge problem?

Just wondering if i need to upgrade anytime soon.

Thanks guys

Sorry for the long post

1) Your rig is not that much worse than the ODE. The only things that really set the ODE apart is the 570 vs the 5870 and the overclock, but 3.9 on the 930 is still good. Not as good, no, but it's nothing that you'd need to buy a new system for.

2) You can't upgrade your RAM to 8. Your motherboard uses triple channel memory, so it comes in threes. You can go to 9 or 12, but I don't think you'll see much of a benefit in doing so. If you're doing more than just gaming though you could try it out.

3) You can if you want. The 5870 is a little weaker than the 570. From a very brief survey of a couple of benchmarks (three total) it seems the 570 will net you about 10 extra frames on average, some games a bit more and some will still lose to the 5870. Granted, these were on older drivers for both cards, so it could be a completely different story now. I'd urge you to do some more of your own research on the topic.

4. Shouldn't be. Just make sure you uninstall all the drivers for the first card before installing the newer one.

Honestly, I don't think you need to upgrade at all. It's still a solid PC. However, if you want to upgrade, the only thing you really need is a new video card. You'll be fine on the RAM and a 3.9 on the 930 is still very good. With GPU upgrades/SLI/crossfirex your rig should do you proud a while yet.

I agree with sdelu.....Other than gpu, you're good to go.   I wouldn't go gtx680.  You could and the difference would be big, but wait another month or two for new Kepler cards to come out.   The 570 is a great card, but newer gtx660/650, etc, supposedly, that will compare to gtx 580/570, etc would be newer with longer support as 570 ages.

The ODE 1 mobo or psu can't sli...yours can.  With your mobo and psu, sli is a snap if you wanted to go that way for max gaming.

Here's a quick peek at 5870 vs 570.    http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/294?vs=306

Thanks for the assurance guys.

I actually didn't know why I got SLI board in the first place because I feel uneasy loading up 2 cards and mess with the complicity of it. Replacing one with one should be easier than adding one to an existing one i "believe" because now i have to mess with the crossfire settings and i have no idea wtf to do there

but I'm glad the rig is still ok and i'll upgrade the 5870 probably at a later date then

Thanks!
