I'm ordering my new rig tomorrow and I would like suggestions for the best/most stable method of transferring data (music) from my older computer to my new one. I'd rather not buy an external drive, although that is an option down the road. I have an iOmega drive but the disks are a bit pricey and I have quite a bit of music to move.

Remove the HD from the old computer and place it in the new computer.  Copy the files over and move the drive back or leave it in the new rig.

Buy this: http://www.thetornado.com/tornado-about.asp

It's the best transfer tool out there. Work with XP-->XP and XP-->Vista. I learned about it in Maximum PC mag which gave it a 9/10 Editor's Choice award. I bought it from Staples for $50.

It works like a charm!!!

This is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. The HD in my old system is 120 GB and I've been cleaning it up in preparation for the new rig. All I need to do is move music, my FireFox and Exploder bookmarks and my email, since all my docs are on a thumb drive.

Thanks for the recommendation!

As a follow up on this post The Tornado is fantastic! It's simple to use and has made moving my music (so far still have a few gigs to go) easy. It'll be a piece of cake moving my documents and a few odds and ends once the music is done then I can use it on my parent's computers.

Thank you, again, for the suggestion!

If they are both on a router. Setup an Ftp server on one (IE - Serv U). Then connect to that server with an ftp client (IE - Flash fxp). Using the Local ip address of the computer with the server. Its pretty easy.

Here is a tutorial on how to setup an ftp server with Serv U - http://www.insanitor.com/servu.htm - install this on the computer with the files

Here is a very good tutorial on how to use Flash fxp - http://www.ironiclogic.com/ftf/tutorials/flashfxp.html - install this on the computer you want to transfer too.

Hope this helps. Plus its free for the most part. :)
