Hey all,

I have an EVGA X58 SLI LE with an Intel 920 i7 overclocked from 2.6GHz to 3.1GHz (by the awesome people at DS of course!) and an HD Radeon 5850 1GB GPU.

This setup has served me well these last four years, but I'm wondering if I need a newer GPU. I play SC2 and D3 a lot, and while I've heard that they are very CPU intensive games, and that the best way to improve performance is to OC the CPU, since that's already been done I'm wondering if I should upgrade the GPU instead.

I only game at 1900x1200 on a single monitor, nothing too fancy display-wise. I've got my eye on a couple of GPUs to replace the 5850. One is the GTX 760 or 740, and the other is the MSI Radeon R9 series, like the 270x or 280x.

I'm not sure if either of these GPU cards are somewhat overkill, but I was hoping someone here more knowledgeable then myself could explain the situation.

The GTX 760 is great... so is the 280x. Just go with either of those two that you can find the best deal on.

Thanks Meller for the helpful advice!

Do you think either the 760 or the 280x is overkill for my resolution and the types of games that I'm playing? I just wasn't sure if I could find a GPU that might be a gen or two behind but might fit my budget a little better.

Not at all. I think it's perfect for your resolution.

But I will say this. For the same price as a R9 280x, you could buy an EVGA GTX 770 SuperClock w/ ACX cooling (about $340 on newegg) which is pretty much the same price as the 280X. And the GTX 770 > R9 280X in most cases. We're talking about a very little difference, but when they are literally the exact same price... why not buy the one that is faster/better?

A card upgrade would definatly help. Most people nowadays pay at 1080p and your a little over that.

You definatly don't want a gtx 740. You'd want a Gtx 750ti at the least for gaming and the gtx 760 is also a great card.

Just depends on how much you want to spend.

If it is working fine then don't touch anything. You might ruin some specs and apps. But if it doesn't serve you the way you want it to, then do some upgrade. Just make sure you get best deal for the parts to avoid wasting extra penny.
I have the best gaming laptop for under $1500.

FrankDDougherty... I'm not sure what you mean by ruin some specs... and upgrading your video card to current generation won't ruin any app's. So I'm at a lose as to what you mean.

Thank you for the helpful advice Meller! I've decided to go with the Nvidia card you suggested, the 760, as I think it will be a solid upgrade.

I'm marking the thread as solved. =]
