Topic: (SOLVED!) need help finding USB 3.0 drivers Posted: 31 Dec 2011 at 5:26pm |
Hey all,
I have a Digital Storm desktop with an EVGA X58 SLI LE motherboard, running Windows 7 Pro x64. I recently installed a PCIe to USB 3.0 card in one of the available slots in the computer, but naturally Windows can't find a driver for it by itself. The card didn't include a driver CD, and I'm not sure which version of the driver I should use. I've tried several from both NEC and Renesas, and the card seems to work sometimes. I got the card because I have a 3TB WD My Book Essential with a 3.0 cable, and I wanted to take advantage of the faster speeds. Whenever I plug the drive into a 2.0 port, everything is fine. But when I attach it to the USB 3.0 port, the results are sporadic. Sometimes it doesn't recognize the drive at all and nothing happens, or I get the message, "This device will perform faster if plugged into a USB Superspeed port." It will work when that message comes up, but I'm not sure if it is transferring at 2.0 or 3.0 speeds. I have checked to ensure that 3.0 is enabled in the BIOS, and I've connected the 4-pin Molex connector to the card when using any device that has its own power supply, like my external drive. Any advice would be most appreciated. Edited by Diogones - 10 Mar 2012 at 1:11pm |

You need the driver for the pci card to have it work correctly. Normally for some usb cards windows will install drivers and it works correctly.

You are dead right, DST. Unfortunately, none of the drivers I've used seem to work correctly!
I realize now that I don't have SP1 installed for Windows 7. I haven't been able to, because it gives me an error message that some system components are missing. I've read that SP1 adds USB 3.0 support to Windows. Might this be the answer? If so, how would I get SP1 installed? Just a repair install, or would I have to make a clean go of it? I need the error that you get when trying to upgrade to sp1. then maybe we can figure it out and get sp1 installed, sometimes its one simple thing, sometimes its pain and easier to reinstall.

The error is "Service pack installation cannot continue. One or more system components that the service pack requires are missing." There is no error code or number, which is annoying, as it makes looking up the problem that much more difficult. I know I have made modifications to the OS in countless ways, and since I'm going to be upgrading to an SSD soon, it may be easier to just backup to the WD with 2.0, reinstall Windows to the SSD, install SP1, and then see if the card will work.

UPDATE: I did run the MS System Readiness Tool, and it downloaded and installed a hotfix for Windows (KB947821). However, even after a reboot, the service pack wouldn't install. I even tried the standalone version of SP1 as well, with no luck.

Boy, do I! I have used so much stuff, that I can't positively identify what it could be, DST. I've installed and used all sorts of software since I got my computer, so it could be anything. I'll check my list of installed programs, but besides that, I have no idea what other software I've used that would have caused such a problem. I suppose I could also check both Program Files (32 and 64 bit versions) but it's a long shot.
I could try a repair install, and that is probably the next step I'll take. I have run sfc /scannow and it reported errors, but said that Windows couldn't fix them automatically. I checked the CBS log files that System File Checker generated, but I can't make heads or tails out of them. I've also contacted the seller on eBay. Of course, it had to be a vendor from Hong Kong, so it's doubtful I'll get a response as to what software or drivers I need for the card. But let me try installing SP1 first, and if that doesn't get the USB 3.0 working, then I can always return the card and buy a different one. Edited by Diogones - 01 Jan 2012 at 9:30pm |

I would try and install sp1 first like you said.
msconfig and 1. in services tab: a. check "hide all microsoft services" b. then hit "disable all" 2. in startup tab, hit "disable all" 3. reboot, now see if you can install sp1. the modifications you have done, somewhere along the line have made changes that now conflict with upgrades/updates. If you want you can try uninstalling them and see if that lets you by, afterwards you can reinstall and use them again. |

Thanks for the suggestion, DST, but no dice. I tried safe mode as well, but it won't let me install the SP while in safe boot. I think I might try the repair install option next.
The buyer responded and sent me a download link to a driver, so I'm going to install it and see if it works, after I remove all my other USB 3.0 drivers first, of course. Edited by Diogones - 02 Jan 2012 at 1:41am |

Let us know, and either way get that sp1 installed, it also closes up holes that virus/hackers can come thru.

Well bad news. The driver that the seller provided did not work, which doesn't surprise me one bit!
I also tried using the Startup Repair option 3 times, as I've heard that can help, but no luck with that method either. I finally gave in and decided to use the repair install option to fix Windows, but I've hit a snag: I tried using my retail Win 7 disc, but after I clicked the "Upgrade" option, I received a dialogue which stated that, "Windows Professional cannot be upgraded to Windows Professional." I thought I was just doing a repair install? But for some reason, when I select Upgrade instead of Custom, the installer will not let me proceed. Very strange! |

The geniusese at MS with win7 decided that we don't need the "os repair" options that we had with xp.
now you can only repair startup and that is if win7 does not get to desktop. in short there is no more os repair option, its a reinstall now. I wish you could test another usb 3.0 card and see if it possibly the card. Edited by DST4ME - 02 Jan 2012 at 2:33pm |

Really DST? According to the tutorial at sevenforums.com a repair install is possible. Are you sure they have disabled this ability suggested on the Win 7 Forums? If so, how recently did they do this?
I agree; I think the card might be to blame, and I don't have another one to test, so I might just return this and order another one before I try to reinstall Windows. Edited by Diogones - 02 Jan 2012 at 3:25pm |

That can work or it can messup it more. in the xp days it didn't get any worst, with this method you could endup in a worst scenario.
In short that is not the os repair from ms, that is a work around to try and repair os. do so at your own risk. |

Oh OK, so it isn't an official MS fix. Thanks for the clarification: I thought it was.
I did try it, but it just told me I couldn't upgrade-install my current version (Pro) to Pro, so nothing serious happened. I guess I'll go with the clean install approach then. Before I start, I just have a couple of questions: 1.) Will SP1 include USB 3.0 support? Maybe this will fix my PCIe card woes. 2.) Should I put the pagefile on the SSD, or on my second, larger mechanical drive? I've heard it's bad to completely disable it, so I'm thinking that if I at least move it to my mechanical drive, it won't consume precious read and writes on the SSD. |

With the amount of ram and ssd you can turn off page file, only thing is that you wont' get dump files if things go wrong.
for that reason you can keep it on. Always remember rule 1 when it comes to OS: 1. always keep all os files/folders on the same driver unless you are looking for lot of headaches. as for repair, if you remember xp had that option in the cd, you never got a prompt for example that it can't repair pro or etc like you are getting. not sure about sp1 but I think usb 3.0 support came with that. with these new gen ssds, don't worry about read write. Well I ran the clean install and SP1 updated successfully, so no problems there. However, the USB card still wouldn't work, so I finally gave up and returned it for a refund, and bought a new one from RadioShack. I installed the drivers I used for the last one, and it works fine now. Thanks again DST for your help.
