I'm looking at finally getting a new computer to replace my current 6 year old one. I'm a little out of the loop these days with all of the new stuff so a little assistance would be appreciated. A few things you should know. I need this to come in at under $1800 after the discounts. I can/will upgrade if I need to, but I do not plan on using 2 video cards in this system. As my wife has pointed out several times to me, this is a computer for work, not for gaming. (but I do both) And, I have to have XP on this system. I am still using old programs (Pagemaker for one) that is not compatible with Vista. However, I do plan on upgrading to Windows 7 when the time is right and upgrading all of my programs.

My current screen setting is 1440 x 900. Best I can do with my current system. (And this is a little iffy at times)

Programs I use: Indesign, Corel, Photoshop to name a couple.
Games: Half-life, Far Cry, Age of Empires, Galactic Civilization, Eve online
Games I would like to play: Mass Effect, Sins of a Solar Empire

Here is my "maybe" system.

well you need to upgrade your ram and GPU, to do that would be a waste cause then XP can't see all of your ram.

so either run vmware and then run XP in that from vista 64bit or dual boot

here you go Ticket# 266007 --- Price: $2004 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $1854

this system will need an upgrade of 3 more GB of ram, down the road you can add a faster HDD and another 260+

if you could go with a 1000w psu on my build it would be better the price after discount with that would $1976

Thanks for the quick response. As much as I like the new system, I'm on an extremely tight budget so this may not be possible. It was hard enough to get my wife to agree with letting me spend $1800 when I can get a Dell for about $1400. (not nearly as powerful & not what I want) I understand about the memory with XP but the issue that I have with Vista is that several current programs that I am using for work will/may not work with it and work has to my main concern with a new system. I'll be looking at again. Thanks

Well lets be fair, as an ex dell customer myself, you can't compare this system with the crappy dell, and I say crappy not because I had problems, but because we can't upgrade that PC, thats why its $1400, cause you can't do nothing to it, but these systems you spend a little over the years to upgrade and keep powerful, something we can't do with our dell's.

also don't think dell is cheaper, if you go and build the best dell has and them come here and build the best here, you will see the dell will cost more and be less powerful the the high end DS.

as for vista like I said either run vmwarein it then run XP in that or dual boot.

many apps will work with vista tho, so unless you are sure it won't work, don't believe the BS you read around the net
