One of the options I am considering is adding a sound card.  I do everything involving sound with a headset.

One concern I have is my current computer has only Onboard Sound and I use the headset jack at the front of the computer.

I realize that adding a sound card will add a plug in at the back of the computer.

If I were to add a sound card, would I still be able to use the front headset jack or would I have to use the jack connect directly to the sound card?

Or I could get a wireless headset, been considering that anyway.

Anyone know a good brand besides Sennheiser, really considering getting a wireless headset.

lol don't bother I asked that almost a year ago and nobody responded other then plantronic which I don't like, I have a pair of RCA RF but I was thinking perhaps 5.4Ghz would be better, cause these get cutoff from time to time.

Kryhavoc,

I went with the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series since I wanted an excellent gaming card for immersive gaming.  It has a PC card and a separate front panel for earphones, other inputs, and real dial controls.

Kind of expensive but it was what I have been wanting for a while. When you have several months of waiting to get a system built, you see stuff that you just got to have no matter how it may not be the most economical or reasonable solution.  I had my heart set on this sound card and I got it.

I have been following your threads lately and I can tell that you are getting close.  I just had to wait to be sure I made it past the 10% lay off at work and when I got home I ordered my beast.  Hopefully you don't have that kind of a reason to hold off getting your dream machine.

Thanks Onkel_Ken, I pretty much have it picked it and I am working overtime to save the money.  That's the only issue, I know what I want, I just have to save money.

Unfortunately, the money I saved so far is being spent on my trip to Orlando, FL at the end of the month to attend Megacon.  My charity group and I have some activities planned to help children while we attend the convention.

Kryhavoc,

I stopped by http://www.megaconvention.com/ and it looked like you will have a great time.  My wife and I are also traveling somewhere for our 30th toward the end of March.  We have looked at a lot of options but most likely will spend a few days in Branson, MO and see a few country western shows.

I guess you will be wearing the super hero T Shirt in your sig block.  You may even be in the media since you look a little like a super hero.  Angry

Actually, the outfit in my banner is my original costume I wore to audition for Who Wants To Be A Superhero Season 2.

I have since acquired a spandex costume that looks even better.  If you want to check out the charity group I belong to this is our website.

We are still in the process of incorporating as a nonprofit charity, but we make appearances on behalf of other charities as superheroes.  Our characters are our own creations.

We have done children's hospital visits and a toy drive and even charity walks.

I stopped by your website and it is pretty cool.  I have bookmarked it to get a better chance at really seeing the good works that your group has done.

I spent the last 5 years as a NREMT-B in a volunteer Search & Rescue team serving the local area and performing general rescue as well as specialized cave rescue.  Unfortunately, I had to deal with several body recoveries that make you hug your children and grandchildren when you get home.

I am 56 and starting to get a little old to be doing the EMT stuff.  I have cut back to just taking friends and family caving when the mood strikes.  I admire those folks like you that are willing to give back to the community through charity work and volunteering.  I wish your charity well and I hope you enjoy the fellowship at Megacon!!

Helping children and seeing a smile on their face was always one of the things that made me continue supporting my community as a volunteer,  There is nothing that makes you feel as great as a smile from a happy child.

You've got that right.  Did you see that picture of the little girl with the stuffed dragon?  That was from a children's superhero costume creation panel we did last year at Megacon.

She wore her costume the whole weekend and still wears it from time to time.  The parents are in contact with us and they are looking forward to us coming back again this year.

We also plan a children's id kit panel where we will help parents get their kids id's made and registered with local police, for safety and quick recovery, if anything bad should happen.  We must do what we can to protect our children.

Actually,  I did see that picture of the little girl holding the stuffed dragon.  It is nice that her parents contacted you guys and are looking forward to seeing you all again this year.  Sounds like a great time to be had by all attending.

The children ID registration is a great service and although we all hope that nobody has to use it, it could save a life if it is needed.

So, back from the threadjack to the subject at hand, anyone know any good wireless headsets beside Plantronics?  I am familiar with that brand because that is what we use at work, I figure there is better out there.

I don't need a gaming mike, just a headset.

Well I would like to Thank you for that work, when i was still in High School a few of us friends got together to do some charity work, and that was absolutely great. It is truly an awesome thing to do, so really thank you for the work.
Why do they blame me for all their little failings? They use my name as if I spent my entire day sitting on their shoulders, forcing them to commit acts they would otherwise find repulsive - Lucifer

Awesome sound card Onkel_Ken! I've been swaying back & forth on getting a sound card - this is swaying me towards the affirmative!

I looked at requirements; 600MB HD space req'd. Does it require that much memory to install? Seems like a lot to me, but I am several years behind in PC tech curve (but catching up quick). Ouch

BTW...I'm impressed with your EMT, and search and rescue work. I know you've touched many people's lives.
And...I'll be 54 next month - good to see another old-timer gamer around! Ermm

I suspect the 600mb HD space is a result of all this bundled software.

Bundled Software

  • Mode Switcher (to switch between Audio Creation, Entertainment and Game mode)
  • Audio Console
  • Creative MediaSource
  • Smart Recorder
  • SoundFont Bank Manager
  • Speaker Connection Wizard
  • THX Setup Console
  • Volume Panel
  • WaveStudio
  • Console Launcher
  • Creative Diagnostics
  • Get PowerDVD (Internet Download)

I also noticed a screen that may be the console launcher or the audio console and looked snazzy enough to require extensive graphics.

Well, doing my own bit of research, it looks like all wireless headsets are USB?  From what I read, USB headsets don't take true advantage of having a sound card.

Further research finds this headset and one of the features I like is the noise cancelling can be turned on or off.  It seemed to get good ratings even without the noise cancelling and seems like it would work well with the Titanium X-Fi Sound Card.
