Any recommendations?

After looking at some of the available cards I guess I should point out that I don't use speakers at all which is what most of these cards are talking about.

So what's a good audio card for a headset player?

From what everybody says (excluding myself) sound cards on the low end are not really worth it.  Motherboards now a days have decent sound capabilities that can handle everything you need.

In my case, the onboard sound has some nasty interference, so I pretty much had to get a sound card.  I tried my old SB Audigy 2, but ran into terrible Vista/Driver problems.  So I dropped about a $100 on the X-Fi card and haven't had a single complaint with it.  I'm not sure what "low end" is for you, but the X-Fi series seems to be a good card.  I use mine with the Razer Barracuda 5.1 headset, and it's amazing.

I'm assuming that would be the best recommendation?

It was my understanding that vista can't use hardware sound, and that even if you use a sound card it will all be rendered with the software engine.

Could be wrong, but I saw a few articles on this when I was thinking about getting a sound card.

I can only offer up my experience with Vista, but I have had no issues with anything thus far.  My sound card rocks my Bermuda shorts off, which now leaves me with no pants because I was too lazy to put underwear on... DOH!

So soundcards work in vista or they don't?

They *work* just fine if you get one certified in Vista.  And I personally think the quality of sound is better.  Adding a sound card in Vista will not give the same performance boost that it could give in XP though.  In this day and age of processing power, and with your quad core computer build, this is a negligible consideration.

Outweighing everything else, you get a nifty red light in your case if you get the X-Fi Fatal1ty.  There, I said it.

i was thinking about just upgrading from mobo sound to the cheapie 38 buck Audiligy SE or whatever, just because im still stuck on the idea of Mobo sound being a big no no. Is this probably not worth the 38 bucks then?

I do run mulitiple programs usually in the background like IMs, music etc when i play games, and the description on mobo sound says this isnt a good idea.....thats the only reason why i upgraded to the cheapo sound card.

I got the X-Fi extremegamer card and am very happy with it. The sound is a big improvement over my old system when playing music and the game sounds are much more defined.

Granted I'm not anal enough to disable it and try the motherboard sound for a fair comparison, but I would reccomend the extremegamer card.

Audigy isn't really worth it. An X-FI would at least have it's own APU (audio processor) which would improve performance.

If your using a Headset My recomendation would be the plantronics Headsets with USB inline or optional conection soundbits.  They take all the sopund from the CPU.  They are 23 cheapest 58 most expensive I have used them for years My newest one has lasted 2 years no problems Just plug and go.  MIC works great for my Ventrilo and teamspeak buddies my voice is clear as day.

(I use Plantronics because they dont let as much outside noise in as other vented headsets Granted the SQUARE pads are weird but VERY LIGHT AND COMFY with the light ventalation they let me hear my wife and kids just fine, and they dont really hear my games so its a win win)

If plantronic takes sound from the cpu, logitech takes sound from the onboard or the cpu as well?

I'm thoroughly lost as to what is "taking sound" from where.  Audio is either processed by the CPU or an APU (if you have a soundcard with one).  To my knowledge there is no headset that has any effect on this, be it a USB connection, digital, optical, telekinetic, or analog.

The ones that take sound processing away from the CPU are the ones that are USB conection and most have a Built in sound processing unit eather as part of a seperate usb conection or In-line and usually say so on the box.  Or in the specifications like at Newegg.com where I buy mine from.
