Topic: Sound Quality On Avon Laptop Posted: 16 Jun 2019 at 10:45am |
So, I've been looking to purchase a new gaming laptop (my old AW m17x r2 is on its last legs) and so far, the Digital Storm Avon has been the best candidate I've found so far....but there is a concern you may be able to help me with.
I've now read about 6 different reviews for this laptop, all of which address the same issue: the speakers sound terrible. They complained that the volume is too low, that the sound is tinny/echoey and one reviewer stated "this is the worst sound I've heard come from a laptop...any laptop, not even gaming rigs." Has DS done anything recently to update/resolve this sort of sound quality issue on the Avon platform? Any news or knowledge you guys may have would help immensely. Thanks :-) |

To be quite honest Zyrius, for years now the little speakers on ALL laptops...and most TV's for that matter...they all suck. It's kind of expected now that most folks will simply hook up good quality larger speakers or an amp and good speakers, or like many gamers...plug in some good headphones to solve that issue. Its industry wide, and its because as laptops and TV's get thinner, producing quality sound on teeny tiny speakers rarely worked well anyway.
The sound quality source your new Avon laptop or any other AV device can output is a different matter... when connected to a proper set of speakers or headphones that you like. Look into a good set of powered computer speakers to use with your laptop or a good headset. |

The Avon does not distort the audio by going very loud, it's not bad... the audio isn't super loud, that's the only feedback some customers may have about the unit.

Trust me when I say that it isn't a HUGE deal or anything, and so far this is still the best laptop based on reviews I've been looking at... I just wanted to know if this has been addressed by DS at all. The "well it's a laptop so speakers always suck, deal with it" sort of approach isn't what I was hoping for...but it is what it is. My poor old Alienware is crazy loud, but granted, it is also considerably thicker. I just like to be able to hear something that is in my lap without needing headphones or extra speakers.
I appreciate the replies. |

Easy fix. upgrade to current windows version 1903 and will automatically download the Sound Blaster Cinema 5 software. After that launch the software, you will immediately get like 10x the volume and still have it clear. u can also remove some of the tinny-ness of them. after that upgrade they are louder then most laptop speakers with average quality.

As to the fix for the built in speakers - Update to most recent windows 10 version 1903, it will automatically install the Sound Blaster Cinema 5 software. Open that up, set to music, on eq put +0 bass, +3 treble. on the SBX pro studio settings, set to surround 40, crystalizer to 50, bass to off, smart volume 0, and dialog+ to 0. there you go much better audio! just make sure to launch the software every restart to enable, then you can completely close it and it will save till next reboot. |

"upgrade to current windows version 1903 and will automatically download the Sound Blaster Cinema 5 software"
How does this work, exactly? When I got my Avon today, Cinema 5 did not appear to be installed. I did a clean install of Win 10 (just because I like doing that with new computers, not because there was a problem), and it is fully updated and Cinema 5 still does not seem to be installed. I also downloaded the drivers zip file from my DS account page. There is a file in there for Sound Blaster AS (or something like that, it's not called Cinema 5) but I didn't see any executable files in it to install anything. I've looked for Cinema 5 through google and all the download sites look shady, so I didn't try that. It's not that big of a deal for me because I use headphones, but I'd still like to know why I can't get it. |

@aronchav go to your Setting/System/About/Windows specifications and find what version of windows your system is running. If not 1903 go to MS and dl. It will take a few minutes. Hope this helps.

I'm running Win 10 Pro, version 1903, build 18362.239. I literally just did the clean install and updated everything this evening.

I will say the sound is still a little low for voice acting in games, but the trick above seemed to help. As for the Sound Blaster bit, make sure you try to manually search for Windows updates, don't just allow it to update in the background. It should spew a list of sound-related downloads once 1903 has been installed. From there, just look for "Sound Blaster Connect" in your Programs list.

Could use some help. I have a Nova laptop and recently reinstalled Windows. Updated Windows but didntget the sound blaster 5 software. My Noa clearly has a POWERED BY SOUND BLASTER 5 sticker on it. Not sure what to do or where to download manually. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Zyrius is correct. The trick is that after you get the latest windows 10 updates, you have to manually get the FEATURES update. It's not that hard to find once you know you're looking for it. I was in the same boat as you, not seeing a download online and not seeing it on my Avon even though I had the latest Windows 10 1903 update. Doing he FEATURES update did the trick and installed Sound Blaster Cinema 5 software. |
