If one could afford a 600gb 320 ssd to go with a 160gb 320 intel ssd, what is the downside to having an SSD as a storage component? Is it because SSD's are still new, and not 100% fully reliable? Or is it the write/rewrite estimated limits?

For the subject... if I'm using Fraps, I require a fast storage drive to write as I am recording. So a SSD would be perfect. But obviously there are HDD's that can write just as good...

There are no hdds that can write as good as ssds, not in 4k size.

down side to ssd is its price. for storage you don't need a fast drive.

HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games

HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage

so ssd for HDD1 and say a 1TB black caviar as hdd2.

ssd should be used to record in your example, once the recording is done, the file gets stored on a hdd.

So if you could afford the 600 gb SSD 320, you still wouldn't get it? I understand the price is outrageous still.

I think I'm reading that you're saying record on HDD1, then transfer the files to the HDD2?

Also, DST i'm not sure if you know but Fraps is based on Sequential write.. if I'm not mistaken.

300 gb 320 intel SSD is roughly 240 mb seq write.
1 TB WD black cav is roughly 180 mb seq write ( If I remember'd this correctly)

Yes that is a huge number is still a large margin, but not that big.

Well still its faster that 60mb per second faster, that adds up.

If I had teh money to get a 600GB ssd would I get it, if I had use for it yes, but right now for storage I would not, I would just use a good ssd for HDD1 with the setup I mentioned above, and than store the file on the 1TB.

storage drive is there to just hold files, I don't need fast speeds to keep files stored.

yes recored on ssd and then trasfer for hdd for storage.

Word... soon I'm ordering my computer. Finally built an AMD midtower comp for the GF so she can play her WOW, now I can finally order mine.

I plan on running with this build, as this is a "mild" build till SB 6 cores come out, with the new socket. Then I'm dropping the big bucks on a new DS system. Obviously I'll be gaming at the native res of my U3011, until I get a "non damaged one" from Dell.. I'm still stuck at my 22 inch dell monitor. So I chose to go with 1 580 atm. Will add the extra fan on top too..

looks good don't forget to

Ask DS specifically for this fan to be added to the top, so you endup with 4 x 200mm fans:

haf 200mm non led fan

the highend platform will bring 6 core and 8 core, and they should be monsters, but so will their prices.

to game at 2560 x 1600 and highest settings we recommend cf 6970 for its higher vcore and it cost less then sli 580, performance will be the same, with high aa settings the 6970 will pull away.

DST, I know you mention using the fast small drive (SSD) for os/apps/games, and a regular large drive (HDD) for storage, but would there be any cons to just having one decent-sized SSD for everything?

Yes there is, it makes manageing hdd1 much harder, things will take a long time, scanning, etc, if the drive goes bad, you lose all data, backing up will take much longer.

Just price, SSD space is a lot more expensive than HDD space. I'd recommend at the very least a cheap 500GB HDD or similar to store your music/movies/pictures/media and/or other junk on, stuff that isn't going to really benefit from the SSD speeds.

My high end gaming build has a 120gb Intel SSD for the number one slot, and a 500gb WD BE HDD for the number two slot. I had just been curious about using SSD's for storage. Thank you as well for the info, Dragoon! Awesome

You can use a second ssd as storage but then the price is not worth it right now.
