Hey, I'm in need of some sort of 2.5" drive that's faster than the one I currently have (the outlier number on the WEI is starting to haunt me) and has at least 160 GB of space or more. Preferably, I'd want something with 220GB+.
My current max possible budget is $500... Any ideas on a decent SSD that fits into this criteria? Edited by ablahblah - 07 Feb 2010 at 4:36pm |

I just got a Crucial 256 GB SSD (CT256M225) and so far i've been pleased with it. Cheapest I have seen it was $640.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/651827-REG/Crucial_Technology_CT256M225_256GB_M225_2_5_Solid_State.html Your going to have a hard time keeping it under $500 if you want it over 200 GB, but a 160GB Intel X25-M 2nd generation you can find for around $450. I decided against x25-m because of bad write times (100 MAX) and 160GB is still too low for me. You could always wait because these SSD's will be coming down in price when the new SSD controllers come out this summer/fall. |

That is a very comical post... The Intel 160Gb G2 beats the Crucial by 300% in small random writes, so for a OS drive that is key. |

At the moment, I have a WD Velociraptor 150GB. Obviously, this thing's a monster already, but it won't fit into a laptop drive. Well, technically it will, but it'll burn out soon as some moron tries turning it on without it's IcePack cooling mount attached.
So, basically, I can't live with 5400 RPM drives, 7200 RPM drives, I prefer not. Therefore, I'd love to go SSD. I've looked at the Intel X25-M, looked appealing, but preferably I really want something with at least 200 GB.... How much of a price drop do you anticipate this summer/fall? |

His post said he wanted a SSD over 200GB, Justin. I also wanted something over 200GBs. I would have gone with a Intel X25-m if they made them over 200GBs. You lose trim with RAID so two drive were not an option. A Crucial 256 GB drive is still 1000 percent faster (Random writes) than a 150GB velociraptor (his HHD).
Don't forget Intel is the company that screwed over the G1 users with no TRIM support and the G1 beats the G2 in random writes. So if he wants the best he should just wait for sandforce controllers to come out. Some sites claim that Intel is making a bigger drive and if that is the case maybe you wait for that also. I have a lot of G1's, I don't feel screwed over at all. They do not lose their speed like the competition did. all of mine still put up very good numbers.
Of course Intel is coming out with larger drives.. just like all other SSD manufactures.
You also are wrong about the G2 and random writes, because that is where the largest gain over the G1 is..You are taking a spork to a nuke fight here.

Well, after looking all over the internet, I've read that write times for SSDs isn't that good. So, it isn't worth getting an SSD as a sole drive as opposed to having it as an OS drive, I assume?

all ssds are not the same, many ssds have great write times. but iops and small file speeds are more important.
