Hi all,

I have a question, I have a msi x470 Gaming Pro Carbine MB and it has 2 M.2 SDD card slots. In my manual it says M2.2 supports PCI e2.0 X 4 and Sata 6GB/s /2242/2260/2280. Does this mean it only supports PCI e2.0 x 4 in those part numbers or is it saying it supports any of those part numbers. I want to get more storage but noticed that the M2.1 Slot supports PCIe3.0x4. Sorry for the Noob question, im learning though lol. thanks in advance.

Also would a M2 SSD that is 3.0x4 be backward compatible with the 2.0x4?

Let's be clear. What we are talking about is M.2 NVMe (Non Volatile Memory express)SSDs. The M.2 form factor (shape) can also come in SATA, but is much slower. Your board takes up to 2 PCIe(xpress) M.2 NVMe (generation)3 X4 modules. The very best ones out there are the Samsung 970 EVO and the 970 PRO. They come in 250MB, 500MB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities.

I would recommend your best bang for buck would be the 970 EVO in whatever size you need/can afford. The PRO line is cutting edge for professional use. You would never be able to tell the difference. They both have 5 year warranties.

That 2242 2260 2280 business merely refers to the size of the module itself. the 970s are 2280s, which means they measure 22mm x 80mm. As it happens, the PCIe3 X4s ARE backwards compatible with PCIe 2 X4, but I don't think your board has that interface. PCIe 2 is older and slower than generation 3.

PCIe stands for Periferal Component Interconnect express. This should be TMI by now?

Hope it helps.
