I have an 80GB Intel SSD in a rig I got about six months ago. I love the entire set up and things have been great. One thing though. I remember from discussions on the boards while I was figuring out my config, that people were saying in order to keep an SSD working at its peak performance, you needed to leave some empty space on it.
My drive currently says 16.6 GB free of 74.4 GB. When should I started worrying about a drop in performance? Thanks in advance for any feedback. On another note, is it true you don't need to defrag SSD's, and in fact it might do more harm to them than good? Edited by MikeA - 16 Nov 2010 at 9:44pm |

You really don't need to worry about it with an Intel SSD. Your write speed will start to dip some if you really stuff it 99% full, maybe 20-30% slower, but that's about it and read speed will never be affected. That 5.6GB you can't access isn't gone because of format size, it's actually a 7% buffer the SSD reserves for itself at all times specifically for wear leveling and keeping up performance, so you'll never actually fill the drive more than 93% or so.
Very correct, do not defrag a SSD. |

Cool. Thanks for the info. I won't worry too much about keeping space free now. Regarding the defragging, I'm glad I know that now. I have been using defrag on a regular basis, as I would with any other HD.
I'll stop now. Hopefully any 'damage' is minimal.
