Here is Steam's annual report on the most common hardware used in PC's that use their software.
It's interesting seeing that around 51% are using Windows 7 and about 48% use a cpu with two physical cores. Steam Report |

Makes sense to me. Dual core GPU can handle the majority of computer needs (office, email, web, etc) with good responsiveness for a while now. Gaming and niche professional apps excluded, most computer users aren't really in need of more CPU power in their desktop. It's actually a little unfortunate for those of us who like to game, because it means less pressure on Intel and AMD big investments in CPU R&D. |

Yes, I think people on forum's such as these tend to wildly overestimate both the processing power and memory requirements of games. I know far more people who are happy playing at medium settings with ~30fps than I do that demand 60+ FPS at all times on high or above settings. I think the Steam report has always reflected this.
