Hello everyone.....I have been out of the loop for awhile when it comes to new games and the new STEAM requirement has got me upset.....After buying my rig...I went and purchase the games i'm going to play on it......almost all of which have to have an internet connection and agree to accept and download the STEAM client to active the games......I have also read that once you get the game installed you have to upload it to STEAM in order to play it.....now accepting the STEAM aggreement and Internet connection is not important but having to upload the game to STEAM just pisses me off....I know the benefits, but I absolutely hate it that I will have to wait who knows how long before I can even play the game while 5gigs worth of info gets uploaded to them.....I'm sorry but 1.5meg upload speeds is going to take some serious time.....
Anyone else HATE this new requirement? or am I just behind in the times? |

if you buy the game from a store you have to upload it to STEAM once you install the game from the disk and you can't play it until you do......add untold amounts of time to the installation.....absolutely going to be a headache.

Quit your whining, Steam is f-ing amazing and I feel bad for anyone who doesn't know about it or want to use it.
You don't upload anything to Steam, just download. The exception is games that support Steam Cloud that will upload a copy of your saved games to Steam if you want (lets you access your saved games from any computer), but this feature can be turned off. EDIT: That reminds me, I have a bunch of extra copies of games I bought during the last Steam holiday sale that I've been meaning to give away. Stop complaining, download Steam and see how awesome it is, then post here with your Steam name for me to friend and I will send you one of the following games or game packs of your choice: The Deus Ex Collection Star Wars: KOTOR F.E.A.R.: Ultimate Shooter Edition pack Half-Life 2: Episode 1 Half-Life 2: Episode 2 Edited by Dragoonseal - 23 Feb 2011 at 4:21pm |

I'm also a little confused about this "uploading" thing? I think you've been misinformed or misunderstood something along the line. As has been mentioned, you don't upload anything, the game is still installed on your local machine, not a remote server. In my experience, Steam doesn't complicate, nor lengthen the install process at all.
I hated Steam with I first used it in 05, however, after 5 years of absence, its worlds better than it used to be, and I definitely recommend it. I can honestly understand your restraints, but give it a try, I think you'll enjoy its features. Also, Dragoonseal, are the STALKER games worth playing? |

What?! Stupid question! Some of my favorite games ever, amazing series. It's what Metro 2033 wanted to be but failed. They are kind of like Survival Horror + Post Apocalyptic setting + FPS + RPG.
Only if you promise to give STALKER another chance. Explore, talk to people for information (and quests), follow your map markers to do the story quests, find better equipment, make money, buy better stuff, try not to piss yourself when sh*t starts going down, etc. Press Tab for your PDA to look at your objectives and/or switch the compass objective pointer between story and sidequests. Leave your Steam name so I can friend you. |

Gah, almost forgot. For anyone who is going to play the STALKER games (or play them again), the Complete mods are a must! Huge visual and audio facelifts, countless bugfixes, and various other needed enhancements. Doesn't change the gameplay though, so it's like Vanilla 2.0, no reason to play without them. CoP Complete is due out any week now!

Hmm, I've been meaning to pick up another game, I'll definitely have to look into STALKER, it sounds like something that would be an enjoyable time sink, . I like the "feel" the world seems to have to it.

Dragoon, any chance I can take a shot at Mirror's Edge? Tried the demo early on the 360, hated consoles again, ever since I switched to PC I forgot about it. Dunno, the concept of it sort of interests me, and just the fact of getting to disarm and beat the crud out of people with their weapons makes the game seem sort of fun lol.

Dragoonseal,
I looked over all the "Complete" mods for stalker looks very nice. I'm seriously considering picking one of them up, which one would you most recommend? Is the story influential enough that I wouldn't enjoy them, if for instance, I started with CoP? |

Hey Dragoon, I'd love the chance to hit up SW:KOTOR or Half Life 2. I've never actually played either but know that they're supposed to be classics. I also recently discovered how awesome steam is when I got my computer in December. Everyone else can add me too also if they'd like. It would be awesome to have some more people to play the latest games with.

You know, I want to say you should play them in order lest you miss out on stuff, but honestly, looking back, you probably wouldn't miss out on all that much. SoC and Clear Sky are a little more connected, and there a are a few recurring characters and story elements, but they're all pretty well standalone (especially CoP). CoP Complete isn't out just yet though, though it looks ripe for release any day/week now! If you don't want to wait you may want to just go ahead and start from the beginning with SoC Complete. I still have extra copies of SoC and/or CoP I can gift you if you don't have them yet. |

Nope, I haven't gotten them yet, I was finishing off a few other games I had, as I hate having games lying around that I haven't finished at least the main campaign/mode on, feels like I wasted my money, lol. I am a story person, I just wasn't sure if they all followed the same person or general plot. Some games share names, but have nothing in common. I'd say I'd like to play at least SoC and CoP though.
Yeah, after your suggestions, I did a lot of reading and it really seems that those mods are the way way to go if you still want to remain as true as possible to the original game, while still improving on basically everything. As for the codes, I know one is not supposed to bite the hand that feeds them, but I'd hate to have you just give me something that you paid for. I buy extra copies of great games when they have good sales specifically to give away to friends, so they don't have to pay full price. The STALKER series in particular, because it's not a very well known game collection (a shame) and they frequently have 85% to 90% off sales on them. I get the extra copies of SoC for $2 and the SoC/CoP packs for $5 ($2.50 each), so I'd much rather gift them to you than you pay the normal prices of $20 and $30 respectively. |

Well, if you wish, I would most certainly appreciate your generosity . I think I got you added on Steam.. as mentioned, I've been absent for nearly 5 years, so all my old friends and info are.. well.. gone, lol, so my profile is pretty bare. I'm still trying to get it all figured out, I can be a little slow sometimes.

yea all my friends play on xbox or ps3 :( anyone want to friend me they can usernames in my sig but i won't be playing much for a month bc thats when i'm building my new pc that can actually handle games that aren't like 5 years old. and honestly steam feels like itunes to me except better in many ways. its website based store is kinda annoying but nothing too bad and it has all the other features that you can use but i don't get why you would personally because all i use it for is to chat w/ friends and game w/ friends. then again its nice the features are there if you want them. but the overlay is awesome in my opinion |
